Brian Itzkin
Brian Itzkin is an American luthier whose work combines the soul of traditional Spanish craftsmanship with a modern, forward-thinking approach. Born and raised in Long Island, New York, he built his first guitar at the age of 13, guided by curiosity and inspired by his father’s woodshop. After early correspondence with master luthier Ervin Somogyi and formal training under Stephen Hill in Granada, Spain, Itzkin devoted himself fully to classical guitar making. Deeply influenced by Antonio de Torres and Vicente Arias, his instruments blend 19th-century elegance with a contemporary tonal palette—offering warmth, clarity, and power in equal measure. Now based between the U.S. and Spain, he crafts guitars using both traditional techniques and innovative materials, such as double-top designs with aerospace-grade composites and responsibly sourced woods. Known for his meticulous detail and ethical philosophy, Brian Itzkin builds each guitar as a unique artistic statement, resonating with players who seek authenticity, beauty, and modern refinement.

Brian Itzkin is a luthier native of New York, USA. The woodworking is excellent, and the finely crafted rosette with a two-tone central checkerboard is very original. The hazel spruce top shows very elegant curls in the grain of the wood. The care dedicated to the outside of the guitar is equal to the treatment of the inside of the instrument. Its construction is impeccable, and the traditional bracing in fan shape is perfectly executed.

This instrument has a distinct sound maturity and a strong character. The balance and tone consistency is particularly pleasant. A real liveliness in the treble response combined with a long sustain makes it a charming guitar that the player can make sing very easily. The choice of rare Brazilian tulipwood for the back and sides was inspired by the guitar of Richard Jacob Weissgerber, a renowned luthier who built exceptional instruments. This wood offers a beautiful grain pattern that is both elegant and visually striking. The soundboard of this guitar is made from an old cedar, presumably from a tree over 1200 years old. The cedar adds a unique resonance to the instrument that is both warm and responsive. The overall sound is full-bodied and rich, with a haunting and deep bass characteristic of the F main resonance. The trebles are lush and artistic, providing a beautiful contrast to the darker basses. In terms of playability, this guitar is exceptional. It has been designed to offer a satisfying overall playing experience, with a comfortable neck profile and easy-to-play action. The fretboard is smooth and easy to navigate, allowing for effortless chord changes and intricate fingerpicking. Overall, Brian Itzkin's guitar No. 34 is a true masterpiece. It combines exquisite craftsmanship, exceptional playability, and a rich, complex sound that will delight any musician.
