Aesthetically inspired by the work of Robert Bouchet, it reveals Carl Hermann Schäfer's immense experience in fine guitar making and is remarkable in every detail. At first glance, it seems as if one is holding an original instrument by the Parisian master. The spruce top is wonderfully patinated, the detailed rosette is faithfully reproduced, the Rodgers tuning machines are replicas of the originals, and the flamed maple of the back and sides presents a beautiful honey color. Upon closer inspection, a small hairline crack can be seen on the top on the right side of the fingerboard. According to Carl Hermann Schäfer's own statement, it was visible from the very beginning. Nevertheless, the 50-year-old soundboard was chosen by him because of its properties, and since two crossbeams run under the spot inside, it is therefore structurally stable.

All the tenderness and charm of the sound of this guitar are unique. This guitar has one of the warmer, darker, and rounder sounds that one can expect from a spruce top classical guitar. With its intimate warmth and easy to play set up, it really shows how close one can get to an original 19th-century Spanish guitar. These instruments are not only well built, but they also offer the very authentic sound of master instruments of the past.

About the guitar

This beautiful instrument is a faithful replica of Antonio de Torres’ FE-09, built in 1859 and famously played by Miguel Llobet. The original guitar is preserved at the Museu de la Música in Barcelona, and this replica remains true to its character and construction—including the tornavoz, just like the original.

The guitar beautifully captures the unique sound of Torres, especially the warm, round trebles that define his instruments. Thanks to the very thin soundboard and cypress back and sides, the guitar is incredibly light, weighing only 1,285 grams including the tuners.

Its air resonance lies between D♯ and E, contributing to its distinctive “old world” charm. Despite the low body resonance, the basses, mids, and trebles all exhibit long sustain, making the instrument highly expressive and full of character.

This guitar practically invites the player to explore Spanish repertoire, and feels particularly suited for the music of Tárrega and his contemporaries.

Condition

As a pre-loved instrument, this guitar is in mint condition, showing virtually almost no signs of wear.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0765/4011/7325/files/karl-hermann-schaefer-2024-15-scaled.jpg?v=1765198738
karl-hermann-schafer-2023-santos-hernandez
Karl-Hermann Schäfer - 2023 - Santos Hernandez

About the luthier

Karl-Hermann Schäfer started making guitars in 1966. This particular guitar is inspired by the guitars of Santos Hernández, and it reflects Schäfer’s dedication to authenticity, nuance, and historical detail.

Tonally, the guitar is strikingly close to a Santos Hernández from the early 1930s, with a similarly angled headstock and an overall playing feel that captures the soul of the original. The instrument delivers a deep resonance between E and F, giving it a distinct “old world” character, while the basses are rich and profound, and the trebles sing with warmth, sustain, and clarity—a rare combination that few luthiers can achieve.

It also boasts remarkable evenness across the entire fingerboard and register, making it not only historically accurate but also a highly playable and expressive concert instrument. Internally, the spruce soundboard is supported by a 7-fan bracing system, with five symmetrical braces and two outer braces connected by small diagonal bars, forming subtle “L”-shaped figures. Similar pattern can be found in 1935 Santos Hernandez.

As a pre-loved instrument, this guitar is in excellent condition, with only a few minor playing marks. It could easily be rated as near mint, and stands as a beautiful and faithful homage to one of the greatest luthiers of the classical guitar tradition.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0765/4011/7325/files/Karl-Hermann-Schaefer-2023-Santos-Hernandez-44.jpg?v=1763033398
nicolaus-wollf-2017
Nicolaus Wollf - 2017

Karl-Hermann Schäfer or previously known as Nicolaus Wollf, started making guitars in 1966.
