Scale length — the vibrating length of the string between nut and saddle — is one of the most important factors in how a guitar feels to play. The standard classical guitar scale is 650 mm, established by Antonio de Torres in the 19th century. But many players — those with smaller hands, younger students, or musicians who simply find the 650 mm stretch uncomfortable — benefit significantly from a shorter scale. This guide explains what short scale means, which sizes are available, and how to choose the right one.

What Is Short Scale?

Any classical guitar with a scale length shorter than the standard 650 mm is considered "short scale." In practice, this typically means instruments in the 628–640 mm range — most commonly 630 mm (sometimes called 7/8 size for adults) or 636–640 mm (a slight reduction that makes a significant difference in reach). Some luthiers also offer custom scales between these values.

A shorter scale has two practical effects: the frets are spaced closer together (reducing the reach required for chord shapes and position shifts), and the string tension is slightly lower at standard pitch (resulting in a softer feel under the fingers). These properties make short scale guitars significantly more comfortable for players with smaller hands without compromising tonal quality.

Short Scale Sizes for Adults and Children

Size

Scale Length

Typical Use

4/4 Full Size

650 mm

Standard adult instrument

7/8 (Adult Short)

628–636 mm

Adults with smaller hands; women; some professionals

3/4

~580 mm

Children age 8–11

1/2

~530 mm

Children age 5–8

1/4

~480 mm

Children age 4–6

Who Should Choose Short Scale?

Players with Smaller Hands

Hand size varies significantly between individuals. Players whose hand span makes the standard 650 mm stretch uncomfortable — particularly for wide chord shapes in lower positions, or large stretches in upper positions — will find a 630–636 mm scale genuinely transformative. The reduced fret spacing allows these players to execute demanding repertoire with less strain and greater precision.

Women Guitarists

While hand size varies regardless of gender, many female guitarists find that a 7/8 scale (630–636 mm) fits their hand proportions more naturally than the standard 650 mm. Several prominent female concert guitarists — including Ana Vidović — perform on slightly reduced scale instruments.

Players with Injuries or Physical Limitations

Tendinitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, and other repetitive strain injuries can make the standard 650 mm scale painful or impossible to play. A shorter scale reduces the reach and string tension, which can make playing feasible — and enjoyable — again.

Transitioning Young Players

Students who have outgrown their 3/4 guitar but are not yet physically ready for a full 650 mm instrument often benefit from a 7/8 size as a transitional step, allowing them to play full concert repertoire before their hands have reached adult proportions.

Does Short Scale Affect Sound Quality?

The short answer: no, not significantly. The tonal character of a guitar is primarily determined by the soundboard wood, bracing, back and sides, and the skill of the luthier — not the scale length. The slight reduction in string tension at a shorter scale can produce a marginally softer attack and slightly warmer bass, but in practice these differences are minimal and easily compensated for by string choice and playing technique. Many world-class luthiers offer their full range of models in both standard and short scale without compromising tonal quality.

Short Scale Strings

Standard classical guitar strings are designed for 650 mm scale and function perfectly at 630–640 mm — the small difference in tension is well within the strings' operating range. No special strings are required for short scale guitars, though some players experiment with slightly higher-tension strings to compensate for the marginally reduced tension at shorter scale lengths.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between 7/8 and 3/4 classical guitar?

A 7/8 guitar (scale ~630 mm) is a full-size instrument for adults with smaller hands — it has full-size body proportions and tonal quality, with only the scale length reduced. A 3/4 guitar (~580 mm scale) is a children's instrument with a proportionally smaller body, suitable for ages 8–11. Adults should choose 7/8, not 3/4.

Can I play the same repertoire on a short scale guitar?

Yes — all classical guitar repertoire can be played on a short scale instrument. Scale length does not affect which notes or positions are available; it only affects the physical reach required for certain chord shapes, which becomes easier on a shorter scale.

Do professional guitarists use short scale?

Yes. While the 650 mm standard dominates professional performance, many concert guitarists perform on instruments with 640 mm or 645 mm scales, and some notable performers use 630 mm instruments regularly. He studied classical guitar in the mid 90's under Richard Wright (now head of guitar at the Yehudi Menuhin school of music). He learnt much about tone production from his studies and set out to find a good guitar with a traditional "old world sound". Failing to find the desirable instrument, Richard enthusiastically decided, as he had worked with wood for many years as a tree surgeon, to try to build his own guitar. Richard built a handful of guitars, and with much encouragement from players, left his job and enrolled in a full time guitar making course at the London Guildhall University in 2001. After completing the course, Richard set up a workshop in Ascot, Berkshire, where he builds around twelve guitars a year. Richard builds using very little machinery, concentrating on using traditional hand tools and glues, as he feels it is important to be in touch with the materials while maintaining control over his work. Richard has also received much guidance and advice from professional players and other makers over the years, also study many master guitars, and this has helped him evolve as a maker and produce well balanced guitars with a low body resonance and fine projection. Richard continues to create guitars with the same passion and enthusiasm as that very first build. This is the location where luthiers are making the entire range of Signature, and Performance model guitars. Kenny Hill has written many articles for various guitar magazines, including Acoustic Guitar, Soundboard, and American Lutherie. The Signature Series are Hill’s finest and most prestigious guitars, each one custom made to the highest standards of excellence, featuring a double top sandwich of Nomex between two very thin layers of spruce and cedar. In this case the cedar is facing out and gives the sound its dominant character, while the inner layer flavors it. The sides of this guitar are laminated with Cypress. Kenneth Hill uses a spruce and cedar mix for the lattice bracing that can affect a very quick response and fast playing as well as of course power. The machine-heads are by Sloane. The Signature Model is built with an elevated fingerboard which not only changes the way that strings pull on the board, giving a firm and positive attack, but it also makes playing in the upper register more comfortable. But also the shape of the neck and the thickness of the fingerboard make it easy to play. Another feature are the two soundports in the upper bout sides near the heel increasing air flow through the body which lets the soundboard move more freely. These holes not only increase the presence of the sound for the player but also add to the volume, clarity, openness and depth for the listener. A Double-top, „sandwich-top“ or „composite-top construction is a special method in which the guitar’s top is laminated from several layers to obtain the lowest possible weight while at the same time having very good acoustic characteristics. The best-known method is the one developed by Matthias Dammann and Gernot Wagner in the 1990’s which is a laminate of two very thin (tone)wood layers with a middle layer of Aramid (Nomex). Instruments in double-top construction are attested a higher sound intensity with easy playability and excellent response. The inspiration for his model 'Kasha' came from the research on the acoustics of the guitar by the American physicist Prof. Dr. med. Michael Kasha. The design of the instrument reflects the acoustic principles underlying the design. The fact that the guitar has to radiate different frequencies as balanced as possible is taken into account in a strongly asymmetrical internal construction, which also includes the construction of the back. The asymmetrical top-bracing allows the development of different vibrating area for the individual frequency positions and prevents the so-called 'acoustic short circuit'. The resonating back enhances the sound radiation in the bass range: the oscillating base area is increased and the cavity resonance is lowered.
Thomas Ochs places particular emphasis on an optimal playability of the instrument. A decent transverse curvature of the elevated fingerboard improves the playability, in particular when playing barré chords. The outer layer of the top is made of alpine spruce, the inner layer of Canadian red cedar and the middle layer of aramid honeycomb fabric. The neck made of Cedro is reinforced with carbon fiber. His workshop was situated at 7 Rue des Fossés Montmatre. In about 1830, Collin was managing an important musical instrument shop in Paris "Pres la Place ds Victoires". This detail is very important for guitarists and musicians: it is the address of René Lacôte, very close to Chanot and Vuillaume, and not far from the Paris Conservatory. We know something of Collin thanks to letters that Chanot wrote to Collin's sister, who had remained in Mirecourt, in which he orders from her accessories for instrument making, tail-pieces, pegs, music stands and other items. From this we may deduce that, although while in Paris at the start of his career he had built some excellent guitars, Collin subsequently preferred to return to work in Mirecourt, where he moved after 1823: here, his network of friends, colleagues and dealers enabled him to maintain commercial relations with Paris, and at the same time, from Mirecourt, to manage a retail shop that was strategically placed in the French capital. This guitar was built around 1830. The top (no cracks!) is made of spruce, back and sides are made of rosewood. It's nicely decorated with mother of pearl inlays around the top and the sound hole. He was encouraged by being awarded the school's price De Gouden Bootschaaf for the quality of his work. Simon is specialized in the methods, materials and instruments of the 19th century, including romantic and early classical guitars. He shares his time between repairs, restorations and new instruments and builds four guitars a year. His workshop is located in Strasbourg, at the French German border, 80 km from Karlsruhe. This guitar was built after the famous instruments by the Londonian workshop of Joseph and Louis Panormo. This instantly recognisable design was inspired by the Spanish luthier Pages whose instruments were brought to England by Fernando Sor. Panormo guitars are a very interesting link between the romantic and the classical guitars. It features characteritics of the first (small body, pin bridge, mother of pearl decoration) and of the latter (tuners, height of the ribs, fan bracing, use of rosewwod and Spanish cedar), making it an ideal guitar for classical players wishing to wander on the romantic repertoire with the appropriate instrument. The back of the instrument displays an appealing set of shades, from the dark brown rosewood to the mahogany neck and the flame maple headstock. For such a small-bodied instrument, this guitar has a great volume and sustain. Actually, it is the quality of the sound itself that is the most striking. This instrument is very well-balanced with a constant tone and timbre all along the neck. The tone is remarkably rich and doesn’t loose of its complexity in fine “piano” or mighty “fortes”. A brilliant instrument for a romantic and classical guitar aficionado. The tuners are by Rubner and the finish is an hard drying oil. In 20 years, not more than 1000 Selmer guitars were built, making original Selmer guitars a rare and precious finding for both players and collectors.
This "Orchestre" model, also known as D-Hole or Grande-Bouche guitar, is in very good condition. The original resonator is still in use and the guitar has only two thin repaired cracks on the top. The neck angle was rectified a long time ago and the guitar is now perfectly stable. It is an instrument of extreme rarity and great historical value. As a young man he studied industrial design. As he became more and more interested in guitar playing, he turned out to be an excellent guitarist and worked as a guitar teacher at Stuttgart’s music school for several years. On extensive journeys and stays in Spain, especially Andalusia, he learned the language and made friends with some of Granada's best guitar builders, e.g. Antonio Marin Montero or Jose Lopez Bellido. Rolf always brought guitars back to Germany from his travels for his students. The demand increased so much that he decided to open a guitar shop. In 1997 Rolf decided to move to Granada, where in his opinion the most outstanding contemporary masters of guitar making lived, and from where he had gained the great inspiration for his own work in order to establish himself as a luthier there. In 2007 he fell seriously ill with cancer and moved to Salobrena on the south coast of Andalusia. There he died on 18 September 2009. During his time as a guitar builder Rolf Eichinger built about 300 instruments.
This sublime guitar built in 2006 has a slightly smaller body and a scale length of only 64 cm, which makes it very easy and pleasant to play. He took over the instrument workshop of his father while Josef Hauser ® was still managing the music publishing house. Hermann Hauser ® I specialised in making lutes and guitars but also remained true to the construction of zithers. In the context of the Guitaristic Movement in Bavaria, Hermann Hauser ® I built a large number of different guitars; in particular the Vienna models and the Munich models in all kinds of forms, but all in absolute perfection. The Terz, Prim and the very rare Quintbass guitars of Hermann Hauser ® I are of highest quality. Even today, the sound of those instruments is still unsurpassed. Based on his special virtuosity, Hermann Hauser ® I developed technical, patented innovations in the area of construction of the guitar’s tops and body-neck connections. The Spanish virtuosi Miguel Llobet and Andres Segovia became attentive to Hermann Hauser ® I’s art of making guitars at the beginning of the 20th century.

This guitar is a particularly interesting instrument by Hermann Hauser ® I, which has some special features for its year of origin 1914. For example, back and sides are made of Brazilian Rosewood, which was difficult to obtain at that time and was also a significant cost factor. This makes it the oldest known Hauser ® I guitar made with Brazilian Rosewood. Also striking is the body shape, which is clearly based on the Spanish shape and very close to the dimensions of the Antonio de Torres FE 09 played by Miguel Llobet. The flat neck shape is also unusual. This is based on a preference of the contemporary guitar virtuoso Heinrich Albert and is therefore also called " Albert-Neck ".
The spruce top is already fitted with the Hauser ® Patent-Bracing inside, which was only patented in 1920, and on the top there is the original concert-bridge, which is unique in its form until then. This shows that Hermann Hauser ® I was involved in the construction of the Spanish guitar 10 years earlier than previously assumed. The frame depth of this guitar corresponds more to the Viennese and Munich models of Hermann Hauser ® I known until then.
This guitar is thus the connection between the guitar type built up to then and known from Hermann Hauser® I and his later Spanish models. This makes this guitar an extraordinary piece of contemporary history.
The instrument was skilfully restored by Hermann Hauser ® III in 1989. It has some very excellently repaired cracks on the top and is therefore in a very well restored and playable condition. The sound of this guitar is reminiscent of a bygone era. The mids sound nice and compact and the trebles very clear and brilliant. The guitar is offered with a special case made for this instrument, which is also exceptional.

Luthier:

Hermann Hauser ® I

Construction year:

1914

Top:

Spruce

Back and sides:

Brazilian rosewood (Pre CITES)

Scale:

640 mm

Nut:

45 mm

Weight:

1230 grams

Air resonance frequency:

A#

Lowden Guitars are built exclusively in the George Lowden Guitar studio workshops in Downpatrick, Northern Ireland - the culmination of over 30 years of design and innovation by luthier George Lowden.
