Already at the age of 13, he started working in the workshop of Augustín Andrés. In 1910, when he was 31, he worked for José Ramirez I. After this intensive and instructive time he was possibly coming to Paris as the first representative of the Spanish guitar in 1914 and revolutionized guitar-making in France. At this time, the French way of construction with its romantic guitars had become unpopular because of the immense popularity of the piano. In 1938, Julián Gómez Ramírez got to know Robert Bouchet (1898-1986) who bought a guitar from Ramírez. This was the beginning of a friendship and finally, J.G. Ramírez taught Robert Bouchet constructing guitars. Later, Robert Bouchet passed on his knowledge to Christian Aubin, who then, in the 1950s taught Daniel Friederich the art of lutherie. In about 1823 he was in Place des Victoires, where he remained until 15th April 1829; then he moved to rue de Richelieu. In about 1832 he was in rue de Gramont. This detail is very important for guitarists and musicians: it is the address of René Lacôte, very close to Chanot and Vuillaume, and not far from the Paris Conservatory. We know something of Collin thanks to letters that Chanot wrote to Collin’s sister, who had remained in Mirecourt, in which he orders from her accessories for instrument making, tail-pieces, pegs, music stands and other items. From this we may deduce that, although while in Paris at the start of his career he had built some excellent guitars, Collin subsequently preferred to return to work in Mirecourt, where he moved after 1823: here, his network of friends, colleagues and dealers enabled him to maintain commercial relations with Paris, and at the same time, from Mirecourt, to manage a retail shop that was strategically placed in the French capital. The case was specially made for this instrument and the nacre marquetry possibly imported from the area of Markneukirchen. The famous spanish poet Federico Garcia Lorca owned an Ortega guitar, which is kept in a museum in Granada. The instrument is in “restored original state” - which means: great importance has been attached to not change the substance. The guitar impresses with an extraordinary richness of tone-colours. The tuning machines are made by Sloane.

Luthier:

José Ortega

Construction year:

1890

Top:

Spruce

Back and sides:

Cypress

Scale:

64,7 cm

Nut:

49,5 mm

Fretboard width at 12th fret:

57,3 mm

Body resonance:

Hermann Hauser ® I as a German luthier, holds a leading position among luthiers worldwide. His workshop was situated at 7 Rue des Fossés Montmatre. In about 1830, Collin was managing an important musical instrument shop in Paris "Pres la Place ds Victoires". This detail is very important for guitarists and musicians: it is the address of René Lacôte, very close to Chanot and Vuillaume, and not far from the Paris Conservatory. We know something of Collin thanks to letters that Chanot wrote to Collin's sister, who had remained in Mirecourt, in which he orders from her accessories for instrument making, tail-pieces, pegs, music stands and other items. This guitar was built around 1830. The top (no cracks!) is made of spruce, back and sides are made of rosewood. It's nicely decorated with mother of pearl inlays around the top and the sound hole. The condition is very good for its age. After that he started to work in Granada at the workshop of José Ortega. Finally he went back to Madrid where he worked at the workshop of Francisco Gonzales. In 1893 he stopped to work as a luthier for five years because of the military service he has to absolve. During that period he was also in Cuba to fight in the Spanish-American war. In 1898 he left the army and opened his own workshop in ‘Calle Nicolas Salmerón’. In 1905 he started to work at the Manuel Ramirez workshop were he took over the position of Enrique Garcia (Garcia has gone to Barcelona). It seems that Hernandez was very much involved in the construction of Segovia's guitar that was made at the Ramirez workshop in 1912.
After the death of Manuel Ramirez in 1916, Hernandez stayed there to work for the widow till 1920. In 1921 he opened again a new workshop in 'Calle La Aduana'. The guitar has a head shape that was designed by Hernandez in the mid of the 1930's. We can assume that the guitar was build around 1935. The dealer label inside the guitar states that the guitar was built in 1921. It was common at that time that instrument dealers changed the date of construction.
The spruce top is in good condition and basically free of cracks. Just beside the fingerboard there are two little stabalized cracks not affecting the sound nor the stability of the soundboard. Back and sides are made of rosewood.
