After an early musical background as a bass player, he turned to instrument making and completed a three-year apprenticeship as a plucked instrument maker in Mittenwald from 2015 to 2018. He continued his studies in Markneukirchen, graduating in 2022 with the master title and receiving the award for the best final instrument. His academic work included research into the practical use of acetylated wood in plucked instrument making, followed by a master’s degree in engineering completed in 2025. Placements in France eventually led him to Provence, where he now works in a shared workshop with Lénie Carpentras. Neher’s guitars unite the visual language of the traditional concert instrument with a sustained exploration of responsibly sourced materials, drawing on the traditions of Mittenwald and Markneukirchen, contemporary French making and the Spanish classical guitar.

About the guitar

Circé, No. 19, is a traditionally constructed concert guitar whose clear tonal core is matched by an unusually immediate response and generous carrying power. Notes speak readily and remain well separated, giving polyphonic lines a precise outline, while good sustain allows melodic phrases to retain their shape after the initial attack. Around this clarity sits a fine layer of overtones that softens the edges of the sound without obscuring articulation, creating a palette that feels fresh, colourful and remarkably consistent across the registers. The spruce soundboard and cherry back and sides also express an important aspect of Neher’s work: the use of regionally available woods within an established classical framework. A slightly elevated fingerboard and comfortably shaped neck complement the instrument’s responsive musical character.
