Based in Ghent, he builds only a small number of instruments each year, allowing for a highly focused and consistent workshop practice. His training at the Centre for Musical Instrument Building in Puurs under Walter Verreydt established a foundation of disciplined handwork and close engagement with the Spanish guitar making tradition.

Alongside his own workshop activity, Dedain teaches classical guitar making at the same institution where he trained. His work is further informed by extensive study of historical instruments and by replicas after makers including Arias, Torres, Santos Hernández, García, and Esteso. This research gives his instruments a strong historical awareness, expressed through proportion, material response, and a particularly refined approach to detail.

About the guitar

This 2026 concert guitar combines a cedar top with flamed maple back and sides, a comparatively rare pairing that works here with remarkable coherence. Through careful treatment of the maple, Dedain retains its clarity and definition while allowing the instrument to develop an unusual softness and depth. The result is a refined, transparent voice in which notes remain clearly separated without acquiring a hard edge.

The trebles are especially expressive, with a graceful singing quality and a sensitive response to vibrato and subtle left-hand inflection. Beneath them, an unusually low air-body resonance gives the bass register striking depth and a broad foundation. This combination of deep resonance, soft overtones, and clear articulation gives the guitar a poised and colourful character, with warmth and definition remaining in balance across the registers.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0765/4011/7325/files/karel-dedain-2026-concert-model-no-06-11.jpg?v=1790770385
