His interest in the instrument began in childhood, surrounded by the music of his father, a classical guitarist. Although he did not pursue formal guitar studies, he developed a close familiarity with its sound and gradually became fascinated by its construction. His introduction to instrument making came through a course in viola da gamba construction at a local Arts and Crafts school, before building his first guitars from a plan inspired by Antonio de Torres. In 2019, he further refined his skills through advanced studies in Madrid with Javier Castaño and José Salinas, deepening his understanding of acoustics, construction, finishing techniques and design. Today, Domato works entirely by hand, producing a limited number of instruments in his workshop. His approach combines the principles of traditional Spanish guitar making with carefully considered modern techniques, always seeking an individual balance between tonal beauty, projection, clarity and playing comfort.

About the guitar

An expansive, airy resonance and an immediate sense of tonal richness distinguish this 2026 No. 13 by Marcos Domato. The instrument possesses an impressive breadth of sound, with chords that open into a generous field of resonance while retaining remarkable clarity between individual notes. What makes its musical character particularly compelling is the combination of power and control. Even as the sound develops with considerable presence, the registers remain beautifully balanced, without individual notes overwhelming the surrounding musical texture. The sustain is generous and remarkably even, allowing melodies to sing freely while the underlying harmonies remain clearly articulated. There is also an appealing variety of tonal colours, with subtle changes in touch revealing different shades of expression. Constructed with a cedar soundboard and Indian rosewood back and sides, the guitar follows a traditional seven fan bracing system, complemented by doubled sides with an inner layer of maple. This construction reflects Domato's pursuit of greater projection while preserving the tonal balance and refinement of a traditional instrument. A decorative strip of ziricote along the centre of the back is echoed by the elegant headplate, which introduces a newly developed design to his work. The slightly pronounced D shaped neck offers a surprisingly natural and comfortable playing experience, encouraging an effortless connection between the hands and the instrument. With its open resonance, expressive range and beautifully controlled power, this guitar reveals the maturity of Domato's developing approach to classical guitar making.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0765/4011/7325/files/marcos-domato-fernandez-2026-concert-19.jpg?v=1793195470
