Simon Burgun - 2017 CF

Simon Burgun - 2017 CF

Overview

Simon Burgun studied lutherie in Belgium at the Center voor Muziekinstrumentenouw with Walter Verreydt and Karel Dedain. He was encouraged by being awarded the school's price De Gouden Bootschaaf for the quality of his work. Simon is specialized in the methods, materials and instruments of the 19th century, including romantic and early classical guitars. He shares his time between repairs, restorations and new instruments and builds four guitars a year. His workshop is located in Strasbourg, at the French German border, 80 km from Karlsruhe. This instrument was commissionned for the Cordefactum festival 2017, where a focus was given on local wood guitars. This simple yet elegant design is based on Torres guitars and features recovered woods: cherry wood for the neck, lightly flamed walnut for the back and sides. The walnut comes from an 80 years old cupboard, where a worm left one mark. The fingerboard is made out of Rocklite, a dense, processed wood substitute for ebony, and the bridge is made of pearwood, a timber traditionnaly used in cabinet making for his convincing imitation of ebony once stained black. This guitar is a great opportunity to get a handcrafted luthier guitar for a modest price. This guitar was built only with non-tropical woods. There is a small story about the back and the sides of this guitar, they were previously part of very old furniture. It is an easy to play guitar with nice balance and clear trebles. This guitar features Rubner tuners and a Hiscox hard-shell case. The tuners are by Rubner, the finish is a hard drying oil and, of course, the whole instrument is CITES-free. A hard-shell case is included.

  • Classical Guitars

The classical guitar, with its soft nylon strings and characteristic timbre, has become a symbol of chamber music, Spanish tradition, and concert repertoire. Its modern form was shaped by Antonio de Torres in the 19th century, setting the standard for the body, fan bracing, and the 65-centimeter scale length that are still used today. Instruments in this category open up a rich palette from the refined Romantic miniatures of Tárrega to the majestic concertos of Rodrigo. Here you will find guitars that preserve historical continuity and at the same time inspire new interpretations.
