After training as a woodcarver in Oberammergau, he established his own workshop in Munich, where guitar making, wood sculpture and restoration developed alongside one another. His studies of Renaissance and Baroque lute making with Günter Mark further enriched his approach to instrument construction. In 2011, Bachmayer began a long collaboration with acoustician and engineer Karl Sandvoss, exploring how the tonal richness of traditional guitars could be combined with the power and responsiveness of modern designs. This research eventually led to the development of his Kaskadensystem. In 2014, he completed his master qualification in guitar and lute making in Mittenwald, receiving the gold medal and the Bavarian State Government's Master Craftsman Award.

About the guitar

There is something particularly fascinating about a guitar that combines extraordinary power with the delicacy and tonal freedom of a traditional instrument. This 2025 creation by Vinzenz Bachmayer achieves precisely that balance. Its beautifully figured bearclaw spruce soundboard and deep, dark African blackwood back and sides form an instrument of understated elegance, concealing an unusually sophisticated approach to acoustic construction. Rather than relying on a modern composite soundboard, Bachmayer employs traditional seven fan bracing complemented by a diagonal bar, drawing on historical construction principles while refining their acoustic behaviour. A carefully selected, exceptionally light and stiff spruce top, together with a neck extending into the body towards the rosette, contributes to the instrument's distinctive structural concept.

The musical result is remarkable for its immediacy, projection and extraordinary evenness. Notes emerge effortlessly and carry with an almost pianistic fullness, maintaining their clarity and presence throughout the instrument's range. Chords unfold with beautiful transparency, every voice retaining its own weight and sustain without disturbing the balance of the whole. Yet beneath this generous power lies a wonderfully flexible tonal palette. Subtle changes in touch reveal delicate, sweet colours, while a more assertive attack produces a broad and commanding sound without sacrificing refinement. The guitar responds with remarkable sensitivity to these variations, allowing lyrical passages to breathe and more demanding musical textures to retain their definition. Despite its full 650 mm scale, the instrument also offers a surprisingly comfortable playing experience, supported by a gently elevated fingerboard. It is a compelling expression of Bachmayer's ambition to unite the expressive possibilities of traditional guitar making with the projection and dynamic freedom expected of a modern concert instrument.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0765/4011/7325/files/vinzenz-bachmeyer-2025-master-modell-14.jpg?v=1793794841
