As the son of tailors, Otto Vowinkel was born in Amsterdam where he started making his first guitars in 1984. While at the beginning he was mainly inspired and motivated by the book ‘Classic Guitar Construction’ by Irving Sloane, he soon designed his own models, which reflected his preference for traditionally built guitars. Five years after he had begun building guitars, he met the Dutch guitarist Esther Steenberg which later became his wife. Also he got to know the Dutch luthier Alex van der Horst (1959-2009), who is better known as ‘Alejandro’ due to the fact that he is Andalusian based. Both men shared their ideas about the ‘ideal guitar’: flexible tone, quick response and the quality of sound as the carrier of volume. A regular cooperation between the two men began and in the following years, Vowinkel became a luthier with a great eye for detail, whose name is well-established in the world of classical guitar. His guitars are sold to clients all over the world. Among others, Vowinkel guitars are played by classical guitarists like the Amsterdam guitar trio, Sanel Redzic, Denis Azabagic, Tariq Harb and George Sakkelariou. Also within the jazz and tango scene Vowinkel guitars are appreciated and highly valued by guitarists like Leonardo Amuedo, Ernesto Snajer, Nelson Faria and Julio Cobelli. This brand new spruce top guitar already sounds as if it has been thoroughly played for ages.
The rich and full tone is consistent all along the neck and the instrument doesn’t have to be pushed to show the whole width of its volume. It has a round, warm and complex timbre and an amazingly singing first string. The stroke is almost inaudible for the audience, what is a very appreciated quality for a concert guitar. This beautiful instrument from a very requested craftsman is a unique occasion for a concert guitar player looking for a warm fan-braced spruce-top instrument. The tuners are made by Sloane. A Hiscox Pro II case is included.
