Description

Thomas Dauge is a French luthier based in Bordeaux. He follows the French tradition of guitar making and proves great skills in the design and construction of the rosette and other marquetry elements. Thomas Dauge pays great attention to every detail of the instrument, such as the choice of wood, the quality of shellac polish, the clean execution of the joints, and, above all, the sound characteristics of his guitars. He succeeds in building very well-balanced instruments with complex timbre and excellent playability.

This guitar masterfully blends the time-honored traditions of old Spanish luthiers with modern innovations characteristic of the French school, particularly embraced by its younger generation. The craftsmanship begins with a sturdier and slightly heavier body, a result of incorporating mahogany strips along the interior of the sides—a technique reminiscent of Dominique Field’s approach. This construction is further reinforced by three tall horizontal back braces, two longitudinal braces, and a robust central brace, all designed to enhance the guitar’s structural integrity and sound projection. By moving the bridge closer to the soundhole, a method akin to that of Daniel Friederich, Thomas optimizes the vibrating surface area affecting the soundboard, thereby boosting volume and altering the sound’s character. The placement of the bridge also allows for the 12th fret to be positioned slightly above the neck-to-body joint, improving playability in the upper registers and providing space for a complete 19th fret under all six strings. This thoughtful design is supported by Thomas’s unique bracing system, which includes a modified seven-fan layout with additional stiffening braces under the treble fans, enhancing the guitar’s tonal stability and responsiveness.

The sound produced by this guitar is nothing short of spectacular—rich in overtones, with a robust and firm tonality that maintains clarity and definition across all notes. Each note is delivered with a dense overtone structure that complements rather than overwhelms the fundamental, making the guitar ideal for articulate legato playing due to its exceptional sustain and distinct note separation. Players who prefer a substantial D-shaped neck will find this guitar exceptionally comfortable, and its dynamic range is a boon for expressive right-hand techniques. Whether used in a solo performance or within an ensemble, this guitar stands out in any professional setting, effortlessly filling any venue with its powerful sound. Beyond its sonic excellence, the guitar is also a testament to meticulous craftsmanship, styled with elegance and constructed from exquisitely selected materials. It represents a harmonious marriage of aesthetic beauty and acoustic power, catering to the demanding needs of contemporary concert and recording artists.
