Description
Fabio Schmidt, an accomplished Italian luthier, began his journey into guitar making by enrolling at the Civica Scuola di Liuteria in Milan during the 2004/2005 academic year. Under the tutelage of renowned masters Aldo Illotta, Lorenzo Lippi, and Gabriele Negri, Schmidt absorbed invaluable knowledge and honed his craft. In 2007, he embarked on a year-long internship with master luthier Roberto De Miranda, a professional relationship that has continued to this day. This period was crucial for Schmidt as it allowed him to delve deeper into the intricacies of guitar-making directly under the guidance of an industry expert. Always eager to enhance his craft, Schmidt attended numerous seminars led by industry veterans Tiziano Rizzi, Enrico Bottelli, and Roberto De Miranda. These experiences undoubtedly broadened his guitar-making perspective and further developed his skill set. Since 2008, Schmidt has regularly participated in numerous festivals and Lutherie exhibitions across Italy, showcasing his exquisite craftsmanship and contributing to the country’s rich guitar-making tradition. Throughout his career, Schmidt has worked in various Italian regions, including Lombardy, Puglia, and Piedmont. In each location, he has collaborated closely with excellent local guitarists, weaving rich professional and cultural tapestries that have enhanced his understanding of the diverse musical landscapes in Italy. Schmidt currently resides and works in Lodi, continuing to craft exceptional guitars that reflect his vast experience, in-depth knowledge, and the diverse influences he has accumulated throughout his journey as a luthier. His story is a testament to the pursuit of guitar-making mastery.
This year at the Roma Expo Guitars 2024, Fabio unveiled a truly remarkable instrument that exemplifies his dedication to the art of guitar making. Countless hours were spent perfecting this guitar, with particular attention paid to its intricate decorations, which were executed flawlessly. The acoustic properties of the guitar are exceptional, standing out even during the guitar comparison event. It features a spruce soundboard reinforced with seven fan bracings that enhance its structural integrity and contribute to its robust sound projection. The back and sides are crafted from carefully selected Indian rosewood, adding to the classic aesthetic of the instrument while complementing the overall sound quality. A few words from Fabio on this guitar: “The decorative part of this instrument is a tribute to Enrico Bottelli’s work. I have reinterpreted the intersecting arch mosaic, his personal trademark for 25 years, in a different form. The mosaic has been used in the rosette, for the top purflings, the headstock, and on the bridge tie block. Out of sight, the guitar remains identical to all other standard models.”
The guitar’s acoustic performance is characterized by thick, clear trebles and full-bodied basses, creating a rich and harmonious sound that resonates beautifully. This instrument is not only a visual masterpiece but also a delight to play, as it easily produces beautiful tones with minimal effort. The balance between the trebles and basses ensures that each note is articulated clearly, making it an ideal choice for performers looking for an instrument that combines aesthetic elegance with exceptional sound quality. Fabio’s latest creation at the Roma Expo Guitars 2024 is a testament to his skill and passion, offering musicians a guitar that excels in both appearance and performance.
