Masaru Kohno

Masaru Kohno, der damals bereits als Japans bester Gitarrenbauer galt, studierte in Barcelona bei Fleta. Nach seiner Rückkehr nach Tokio (1960) räumte er mit dem westlichen Stereotyp der japanischen Produktion auf, indem er nicht die geringste Neigung zeigte, lediglich höfliche Imitationen spanischer Gitarren herzustellen. Vielmehr machte er bestehenden Gitarrenbauern die Vorherrschaft auf dem Markt streitig. Er entwickelte sein eigenes "Torres"-Modell mit einem bequemen Hals für Hände, die kleiner und weniger kräftig als die von Segovia waren, und einer starken Stimme mit brillanten Höhen und klaren Bässen. Es gewann bald den angesehenen Queen Elizabeth Preis für den Klang seiner Gitarren. In den späten 60er Jahren hatten Kohnos Gitarren nicht nur einen weltweiten Ruf für gleichbleibend hohe Qualität zu niedrigen Preisen gewonnen, sondern auch einen weltweite Nachfrage für weit mehr Gitarren als er jemals selbst herstellen konnte. Mit der Unterstützung seines Neffen (Sakurai) reagierte er mit einer modernen Manufaktur, die in den nächsten zwei Jahrzehnten der Welt eine Ramirez-Alternative in Sachen Qualität bot. Kohnos Marktanteil wuchs bis Mitte der 80er Jahre, als ein allgemeiner Rückgang der Gitarrenverkäufe nach einer ununterbrochenen 30-jährigen Marktexpansion das Wachstum sowohl von Kohno als auch der meisten anderen konkurrierenden Gitarrenhersteller einschränkte. Ähnlich wie in Madrid, wo viele Handwerker ihren Ursprung in den Ramirez-Werkstätten haben, waren in Tokio viele der besten unabhängigen Gitarrenbauer, die in den 70er Jahren aufkamen, ehemalige Kohno-Mitarbeiter. Masaru Kohno (1926-1998) ist nicht nur der bedeutendste Gitarrenbauer Japans, sondern auch einer der besten weltweit. Er wurde in Mito City, Japan, geboren und schloss 1948 sein Studium an der Hochschule für Kunst und Handwerk in Tokio mit einem Diplom in Holztechnik ab. Während dieser Zeit begann er sich für den Gitarrenbau zu interessieren, und 1959 reiste er nach Spanien, um das Handwerk zu erlernen. Kohno ging sechs Monate lang in der Werkstatt von Arcangel Fernandez in die Lehre, und obwohl keiner der beiden ein Wort der Sprache des anderen sprach, gelang es ihnen, sich zu verständigen. Kohnos Lehrzeit bestand hauptsächlich darin, im hinteren Teil des Ladens zu sitzen und den Meister Fernandez still, aber aufmerksam bei der Arbeit zu beobachten. Kohnos stilles Lernen zahlte sich aus. Nach seiner Rückkehr nach Tokio gründete er seine eigene Werkstatt und erlangte schnell Anerkennung unter den japanischen Gitarristen. Sein internationales Debüt hatte er 1967, als er beim internationalen Gitarrenbauwettbewerb Elizabeth Concourse in Belgien mit der Goldmedaille ausgezeichnet wurde. Zu den Juroren gehörten unter anderem Ignacio Fleta, Robert Bouchet, Joaquin Rodrigo und Alirio Diaz. Seitdem haben viele weltberühmte Spieler Kohno-Gitarren gespielt, darunter Julian Bream, Oscar Gighlia und Sharon Isbin, um nur einige zu nennen.
