The Origin and Evolution of the Double-Top Guitar

Strictly speaking, the term "Double-Top construction" isn’t entirely accurate, but it has become a common term in the industry. A more fitting description for this construction method, where the guitar top or other components are laminated from multiple layers, would be "Sandwich" or "Composite".

The most renowned method is the laminate developed in the 1990s by Matthias Dammann and Gernot Wagner, consisting of two very thin layers of wood with a central layer of Aramid honeycomb material ("Nomex").

In guitars, the outer layer is often European spruce or Canadian cedar, while the middle layer is made of Aramid honeycomb. The objective of this construction is to reduce the weight of the top while maintaining the same stiffness. This optimizes the instrument’s responsiveness, sustain, and dynamic range. Even the sustain, balance, and tonal aesthetics of the instrument differ from those with traditional, solid wood tops.

Volume of Double-Top Guitars

Double-Top tops can weigh up to 25% less than a solid top. This weight advantage contributes to the enhanced volume of Double-Top guitars, although it’s not the sole factor. Laminated sides, for instance, further amplify the volume. These sides are no longer bent over the bending iron conventionally. Multiple thin layers of precious wood veneer are intricately glued together using a device, creating an extremely rigid structure that optimally supports the Double-Top top. The result is a robust, forward-projecting sound development.

However, some Double-Top guitars aren’t necessarily louder than traditionally built ones. The reason for this can be attributed to a heavier top construction. If the Double-Top is heavier than a solid top, the advantage diminishes.

Responsiveness of Double-Top Guitars

Yet, the reduced weight not only enhances volume but also improves playability. The guitar responds more directly and agilely to the player’s touch, especially during transitions from nail attacks to a fuller tone. The lightweight nature of the Double-Top top also produces more high overtones, particularly near the bridge.

The Sound of Double-Top Guitars

Double-Top tops are specifically designed to have certain areas that are more flexible. Some of our customers are surprised by the range of tonal colors. They wouldn’t suspect they’re playing a guitar with a Double-Top top if they didn’t know.
