Matthias Dammann – Master Luthier and Innovator
Matthias Dammann of Germany is one of the most influential figures in modern guitar making, celebrated for his groundbreaking development of Double-Top guitars. Driven by a passion to expand the possibilities of traditional guitar construction, he embarked on an innovative path that reshaped the world of classical guitar building.
His deep study of the sound behavior of historical instruments — particularly the guitars of Antonio de Torres — formed the foundation of his research. Through tireless experimentation, Dammann developed his own advanced techniques, earning patents and worldwide recognition.
His most significant contribution is the Double-Top concept. By using a “sandwich” soundboard or modern materials such as Nomex, he succeeded in combining extreme lightness with remarkable structural strength. This innovation resulted in instruments with exceptional responsiveness, clarity, and powerful projection. The Double-Top design quickly became admired by leading concert guitarists around the globe.
World-renowned artists such as David Russell and Manuel Barrueco are among those who have embraced his instruments. The Beijing Guitar Duo and many other acclaimed performers have showcased Dammann guitars in concerts and recordings worldwide.
Matthias Dammann stands as a visionary whose influence reaches far beyond his own workshop. His research, experimentation, and innovative spirit continue to inspire new generations of luthiers to explore fresh ideas and push the limits of guitar making.
