Tobias Braun – Guitar Maker from Austria
Tobias Braun was born in 1960 in Holzminden/Weser, Germany. In early 1961, his family moved to Perchtoldsdorf near Vienna. After completing high school, he began studying German literature and communication sciences in 1980, but these fields did not fulfill him. In 1983, he built his first concert guitar through self-study.
Training with José Romanillos
In 1984, he attended his first guitar-making course with José Luis Romanillos in Zurich. Within three weeks, he learned what typically takes several years of apprenticeship. A second course followed in 1988 in Aalst, Belgium. In 1989, he completed his master’s examination in Vienna and attended his third course with Romanillos in Córdoba.
Collaborations and Milestones
In 1990, alongside his workshop activities, Tobias Braun worked as a co-translator of the book “Antonio de Torres. Ein Gitarrenbauer – Sein Leben und Werk” by J. Romanillos. In 1992, he participated in another course in Córdoba. In 1993, he completed a one-week training program at Gibson in Nashville and assisted Romanillos again in the summer. Since autumn 1993, he has collaborated with Japanese guitar dealer Eisuke Ozaki. In 1998, he moved into his new home with an attached workshop in Gaaden in the Vienna Woods. Since 2001, he has been a founding member of “N.I.C.E. – Neufeldner Instrumentenbauer Congress und Erlebnistage” and co-organizer of the annual congress.
