Paco Santiago Marín – Guitar Maker
Early Life and Family Heritage
Paco Santiago Marín was born in 1946 in Granada. Coming from a family of guitar makers, he has been building guitars since 1965. His father, Francisco Santiago Oliva, was a carpenter who taught him woodworking skills. In 1963, Paco joined the workshop of his uncle, Antonio Marín Montero, to learn the craft of guitar making.
Establishing His Own Workshop
In 1972, Paco founded his own workshop in Granada. For the past 20 years, he has been working alongside his son, Luis Santiago, continuing the family tradition.
International Teaching and Influence
He has taught courses at many international festivals, including:
- 6th Guitar Competition and Festival of Havana, Cuba (1992)
- Córdoba Guitar Festival (2000–2003)
- American Institute of Guitar in New York (1993)
Instrument Characteristics and Legacy
Paco’s guitars are known for their projection, balance, and rich tone. Many professional musicians prefer his instruments. He has also built replicas of historic guitars, including an 1864 Antonio de Torres model once owned by Francisco Tárrega, commissioned by guitarist Adrián Rius.
