About the luthier
Andrea Stanzione is an Italian luthier based in Milan, whose work combines refined craftsmanship with an intellectually rooted approach to guitar design. He grew up in Lissone, a village in the Brianza region north of Milan, internationally recognized for its artisanal furniture-making tradition. It was in local woodworking shops that Andrea first encountered the world of fine craftsmanship. After initially training as an electrical technician, he decided in 2001 to pursue luthiery and enrolled at the Civic School of Luthiery in Milan, graduating with honors in 2005. He later began a multi-year collaboration with Master Enrico Bottelli, through which he deepened his knowledge of traditional Spanish guitar-making. His current workshop is located in Villapizzone, a historic neighborhood on Milan’s northwestern edge.
About the guitar
The 2025 “La Cardinale” model by Andrea Stanzione represents a milestone in his evolution as a luthier. The name carries layered symbolic meanings. It refers to the number nine, a nod to its distinctive nine-fan bracing system, and also draws from numerology, suggesting transformation. The name evokes the cardinal points of a compass, symbolizing direction, and the Italian word “cardine,” meaning hinge, which reflects a core element of the luthier’s philosophy.
While it follows traditional construction principles, “La Cardinale” is not a replica but an original concept synthesizing Stanzione’s accumulated experience. The soundboard features a nine-fan bracing system with an under-bridge bar, where the five central struts are crafted from bamboo and the outer ones from spruce. The transverse bar beneath the soundhole includes two openings, allowing the outer struts to pass through unobstructed.
The top is made from highly flexible red spruce, chosen for its lightness and resonance. This, combined with the unique bracing pattern, results in deep and textured basses, enhanced harmonics and rich sustain. At the same time, the treble register remains expressive and clear, supported by a natural reverb. Playability is a central aspect of Stanzione’s approach, regarded as inseparable from tonal quality. This instrument offers a refined playing experience while maintaining structural efficiency and sonic depth.
