Marco Lijoi – Guitar Maker
Early Fascination with Music and Wood
My journey into the world of music began at the tender age of four when I was introduced to the Suzuki Method and the classical guitar. As I grew, my fascination with both wood and music continued to blossom, leading me down a path that would eventually merge these passions into the art of guitar making.
Academic Background and Discovery of Luthiery
After completing my studies at a classical gymnasium and spending a year immersed in the realm of physics at the University of Turin, I felt a strong pull to combine my two loves – the scientific world of physics and the artistic world of music and craftsmanship. This calling led me to embark on a one-year guitar-making course under the guidance of the esteemed guitar maker Aldo Illotta in Biella.
Formal Training in Milan
In the subsequent year, I pursued further excellence in the art of guitar craftsmanship by enrolling at the Civica Scuola di Liuteria in Milan. Here, I had the privilege of studying under the mentorship of some of Italy’s finest guitar makers. Over the course of four years, I honed my skills and absorbed the rich knowledge and techniques that have been passed down through generations of craftsmen.
My dedication and commitment culminated in achieving my diploma as a master guitar maker. This achievement not only validated my journey but also propelled me into a world of creativity, innovation, and craftsmanship.
Professional Experience and Personal Workshop
During my time at the Civica Scuola di Liuteria, I embarked on another significant phase of my career by establishing my own business. This step marked my official entry into the realm of professional guitar making, where I could now channel my expertise, passion, and creativity into crafting exceptional instruments.
In addition to nurturing my own venture, I had the privilege of working for two years at Salvi, a renowned brand specializing in harps. This experience provided me with valuable insights into precision craftsmanship, attention to detail, and the importance of sound quality – all of which continue to influence my work as a guitar maker.
Philosophy and Vision
As I continue to evolve as a guitar maker, I am driven by the desire to create instruments that resonate with musicians on a profound level. Every guitar I craft is a labor of love, meticulously constructed to produce a balanced, rich, and harmonious tone. My journey from a young Suzuki-method enthusiast to a seasoned guitar maker has been a testament to the power of passion, dedication, and the pursuit of artistic excellence.
