Overview

About the luthier

Fabio Zontini was born in Milan, Italy 1971. He received his diploma as a Master Luthier Restorer from the Civica Scuola di Liuteria in Milan in 1996. He has crafted over 250 instruments in his professional career, drawing inspiration from the masters of historical luthiery. Fabio considers the opportunity to view and measure the works of authors such as Antonio De Torres, Hermann Hauser I, Pietro Gallinotti, Francisco Simplicio, and Louis Panormo as fundamental importance, as they have contributed significantly to the development of his sound and aesthetic approach. In 2007, at the Museum of Music in Barcelona, Fabio conducted an in-depth study of Miguel Llobet’s 1859 guitar, which inspired Hauser I’s Spanish-style instruments, and the famous “Papier Machè” guitar (1862), both made by Antonio De Torres and of which Fabio has produced several copies over the years. Fabio has participated in numerous national and international exhibitions and given lectures at conservatories, music schools, museums, and important guitar festivals in Italy, Europe, and Central America. In 2016, he collaborated on creating the “Arcimbolda” guitar, a unique instrument crafted by a collective of 15 luthiers, on the occasion of the Roma Expo Guitar. For over twenty years, Fabio has chosen to live and work in the peaceful Ligurian countryside, surrounded by the olive trees of Olle that encircle his home and workshop.

About the guitar

This extraordinary instrument by Fabio Zontini represents a true milestone in his career as a guitar maker. It is the second creation in a very limited series, following the first project, “La Sibilla”, completed in 2020. The project for this guitar, named “La Delizia”, was initiated in 2021 and completed in 2025, with its debut at the prestigious Roma Expo Guitars 2025. The last guitar in this series will be completed in 2030.

One of the most remarkable features of this guitar is the painted interior, which depicts parts of “The Garden of Earthly Delights” by the Flemish painter Hieronymus Bosch (circa 1480–1490). This enigmatic Renaissance triptych explores the human experience through three panels: Eden (innocence), the Garden of Earthly Delights (hedonism and excess), and Hell (punishment and damnation).

The artist Michaela L. R. Calliero executed the artwork with exceptional precision, replicating selected parts of the original painting onto the inner surfaces of the soundbox, maintaining the correct sequence. Given the complexity of the original, only the most meaningful elements were chosen. A detailed booklet accompanies the guitar, explaining the artistic process and symbolism.

From a luthier’s perspective, “La Delizia” is an outstanding example of fine craftsmanship:

- Torrefied spruce soundboard from Val di Fiemme (Dolomites)

- Five fan bracings, two lower transverse bars, and a flat bridge plate

- Back and sides made of quilted Balkan maple, historically considered a magical wood believed to ward off bad luck

- A rosette crafted from mother of pearl, with 105 inlays forming a sequence of stylized arches and capitals

Acoustically, this guitar is nothing short of exceptional:

- Brilliant clarity, perfect balance, and powerful volume

- Exceptional playability, thanks to a comfortably shaped neck

- The soundboard has the ideal tension, enhancing responsiveness and ease of play

“La Delizia” is not just a musical instrument but a true work of art, seamlessly blending sound, craftsmanship, and visual art into a unique and masterful creation. A guitar designed for connoisseurs who appreciate rare and exceptional instruments.

Fabio Zontini - 2024/2025 "La Delizia" REG 2025 Limited Edition Classical Guitar Review

While this guitar is sold, these are ready for you

  • Classical Guitar

The classical guitar, with its soft nylon strings and characteristic timbre, has become a symbol of chamber music, Spanish tradition, and concert repertoire. Its modern form was shaped by Antonio de Torres in the 19th century, setting the standard for the body, fan bracing, and the 65-centimeter scale length that are still used today. Instruments in this category open up a rich palette from the refined Romantic miniatures of Tárrega to the majestic concertos of Rodrigo. Here you will find guitars that preserve historical continuity and at the same time inspire new interpretations.
