Carreiro-Williams Duo — A Leading Guitar Duo of Their Generation

Carreiro-Williams Duo — A Leading Guitar Duo of Their Generation

A great guitar duo is more than two soloists side by side; it is a single instrument with twelve strings and two minds. The Carreiro-Williams Duo — the Portuguese guitarist Jose Carlos Carreiro and his colleague Torrin Williams — have grasped that truth completely, and in just a few years they have become one of the most admired guitar partnerships of their generation.

A partnership born in The Hague

The two players met while studying at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague with the eminent teacher Zoran Dukić, and formed their duo in 2019. They went on to pursue master's studies together at the Kunstuniversität Graz, working on chamber music with Petrit Çeku and on early music with the lutenist David Bergmüller. That shared schooling matters: the closeness of ensemble that distinguishes them comes from years of learning in the same rooms, under the same demanding ears.

Stretching what a duo can do

What sets the Carreiro-Williams Duo apart is ambition of repertoire. Rather than confining themselves to the music originally written for two guitars, they range widely — from piano works by Gershwin and Tchaikovsky to orchestral scores by Villa-Lobos and Manuel de Falla, all reimagined for their two instruments. Arranging music of that scale for guitar duo is a serious craft in itself, demanding choices about voicing, colour and texture on every page, and it gives their programmes a richness and surprise that pure-guitar fare rarely matches.

A reputation on the rise

Having performed widely across the Netherlands and beyond, the pair have built a reputation for being studious and versatile — qualities that come through in the cleanliness of their ensemble and the breadth of their concerts, which take in everything from Rameau and Bach to the duos of Ferdinando Carulli and the music of Manuel Ponce. One half of the duo, Torrin Williams, is profiled separately as a rising solo voice in his own right. Together, they are among the most exciting chamber partnerships the guitar has produced in recent years.

  • Classical Guitars

The classical guitar, with its soft nylon strings and characteristic timbre, has become a symbol of chamber music, Spanish tradition, and concert repertoire. Its modern form was shaped by Antonio de Torres in the 19th century, setting the standard for the body, fan bracing, and the 65-centimeter scale length that are still used today. Instruments in this category open up a rich palette from the refined Romantic miniatures of Tárrega to the majestic concertos of Rodrigo. Here you will find guitars that preserve historical continuity and at the same time inspire new interpretations.
