Lorenzo Frignani
Lorenzo Frignani developed a broad interest in lutherie at the end of the 1970s. His professional career began in 1985, and since then he has received recognition for his craftsmanship on both national and international levels. He has won several lute-making competitions in Bagnacavallo and Baveno and has served as a jury member at national and international competitions, including Baveno and Pisogne.
He acts as a consultant for various boards, foundations, associations and museums dedicated to musical heritage. He also serves as an artistic consultant to the Comune of Pieve di Cento (Bologna) for projects related to stringed instruments, including exhibitions, conferences, courses and concerts.
Frignani was a member of the French association A.L.A.D.F.I. and served for several years as Vice-President of A.L.I Professionisti, the Italian Association of Luthery. His principal work focuses on the creation and restoration of fretted and bowed instruments.
He has written and edited catalogues and publications on classical lutherie and historic plucked instruments, an area in which he is also recognised as a collector and expert. In 2007 he founded LF Editions.
The Craft
Classical guitar construction at concert level demands years of accumulated knowledge: how individual pieces of timber vibrate, how bracing patterns affect tonal balance, how small changes in geometry shift the character of an instrument. A finished concert guitar typically represents several hundred hours of hand work. Every decision — wood selection, arch height, brace dimensions — shapes what a player can do with the finished instrument.
