Profile
Otto Vowinkel is a widely respected name in the classical guitar world, known for his meticulous craftsmanship and strong commitment to traditional construction methods. His instruments are appreciated by guitarists worldwide for their refinement and precision.
Characteristics and Sound
Vowinkel’s guitars are physically light, exceptionally comfortable to play, highly responsive and remarkably powerful. They offer refined tonal qualities, balanced sound colour across all registers and excellent intonation.
Construction and Design
His concert guitars feature a hand-applied French polish using shellac. The distinctive rosette incorporates a herringbone motif around a mosaic inspired by the flag of the city of Amsterdam. The headstock design reflects the façade of his workshop, giving each instrument a recognisable visual identity.
Models and Variants
In addition to his traditional classical model, Vowinkel also builds baritone guitars (fifth bass), cutaway models, seven-string guitars and flamenco guitars. His study models are hand-built under his supervision in Spain.
Materials
He uses Canadian cedar or European spruce for the top and various types of rosewood for the back and sides. He also works with cocobolo, maple and Spanish cypress, particularly for flamenco instruments.
The Craft
Classical guitar construction at concert level demands years of accumulated knowledge: how individual pieces of timber vibrate, how bracing patterns affect tonal balance, how small changes in geometry shift the character of an instrument. A finished concert guitar typically represents several hundred hours of hand work. Every decision — wood selection, arch height, brace dimensions — shapes what a player can do with the finished instrument.
