C. Boullangier - ca 1860

Overview

This magnificent French-style romantic guitar, built in the tradition of René Lacote guitars, is a small wonder. Probably built in the 1860s, it has one of the most beautiful labels we have ever seen. It is the etiquette of C. Boullangier, a London dealer and luthier. French guitars were extremely popular at the time and their trade was established worldwide. Boullangier moved to Dean Street in 1862 and took over the business of the two Roudhloff brothers. The latter had a great influence on Boulangier in terms of guitar making, which complemented his already well-respected skills as a violin and cello maker. This guitar is probably from his own hand and is an absolute gem.

The state of preservation of this guitar is simply outstanding. There are no cracks to declare, which is almost unprecedented! This rarity is sold with its original luxurious tuning machines as well as its original wooden case. The latter has traveled a lot and one can see very old postal labels glued on the outer side. In perfect condition and extremely well restored, this superb instrument will charm any collector or enthusiastic guitarist.

  • Classical Guitars

The classical guitar, with its soft nylon strings and characteristic timbre, has become a symbol of chamber music, Spanish tradition, and concert repertoire. Its modern form was shaped by Antonio de Torres in the 19th century, setting the standard for the body, fan bracing, and the 65-centimeter scale length that are still used today. Instruments in this category open up a rich palette from the refined Romantic miniatures of Tárrega to the majestic concertos of Rodrigo. Here you will find guitars that preserve historical continuity and at the same time inspire new interpretations.
