Beatriz Pinto – From a Street Festival in Aveiro to the Concert Stage
Beatriz Pinto belongs to the generation of Portuguese guitarists now making itself heard across Europe. Born on 4 October 2004, she has collected more than 25 international prizes before the age of twenty-one and today studies in Germany with one of the instrument's most respected teachers.
A Chance Encounter at Seven
Her path to the guitar began by accident. At the age of seven she came across the instrument at a neighbourhood street festival in her home city of Aveiro — and started formal lessons soon afterwards with the teacher João Moita, who would guide her through the whole of her school education.
In 2013 she entered the Conservatório de Música Calouste Gulbenkian de Aveiro, where she remained until the completion of her secondary studies. The Portuguese conservatory system gave her a decade of continuous training with a single teacher before she left the country — an unbroken foundation that is clearly audible in her playing.
Competition Successes
She began winning competitions at around the age of nine. Her first international first prize came in 2016 at the Cidade do Fundão competition, followed in 2017 by first prize at the Luso-Spanish competition in Fafe.
2021 was an exceptional year: she took top awards at the José Tomás International Competition in Villa de Petrer, the Gandía guitar competition, the King's Peak International Music Competition, the IMKA Internet Music Competition, the World Open Online Music Competition, and won both first prize and the grand prize at the online competition Concert Day in Russia.
In 2023 she added the Lagoa-Zé Gregório International Guitar Competition and, in November of that year in Valencia, took first prize at CIGA Jr., the junior division of one of Spain's significant international guitar competitions.
Beyond the Competition Circuit
Between 2018 and 2022 she performed at venues and festivals in Portugal, Germany and Spain. In 2022 she reached the semi-finals of Got Talent Portugal, placing among the top ten — a rare crossover for a classical guitarist, and one that brought the instrument to an audience that would never buy a ticket for a guitar recital. She has also appeared on Portuguese and Spanish television and in Portuguese-language broadcasting in Canada.
Studies in Weimar
Pinto now studies at the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar with Ricardo Gallén, the Spanish guitarist whose complete Bach and Sor recordings have made him one of the most influential figures in guitar pedagogy today. Repertoire
Pinto names the Capriccio Diabolico by Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco as her favourite piece — the composer's homage to Paganini, and a work that asks for both virtuosity and a sense of theatre. The most demanding piece she has performed, by her own account, is the Toccata by Joaquín Rodrigo — a piece with an unusual history. Rodrigo wrote it in 1933 for Regino Sainz de la Maza, but it was never published or performed in the composer’s lifetime; the manuscript surfaced in Sainz de la Maza’s archive decades later, and the work received its public premiere only in 2006, in Madrid. Its writing pushes against the physical limits of the instrument, which is why it stayed unplayed for so long.
Outlook
A player who arrives at twenty with more than twenty-five international prizes and a place in one of Europe's leading guitar classes has already answered the question of talent. What follows is the harder and more interesting part: the slow construction of an individual voice. Beatriz Pinto is a name worth remembering.
