Peruvian guitarist and composer Jorge Caballero is recognized as one of the most accomplished artists of his generation. His performances combine technical brilliance, musical clarity and a unique sense of expressive balance. Over a career spanning decades, he has gained international acclaim for his artistry and for expanding the expressive possibilities of the classical guitar.
Repertoire and artistic voice
Caballero’s musical approach blends analytical precision with poetic sensitivity. Critics praise his ability to interpret complex works with both power and transparency. He is especially celebrated for his transcriptions of large-scale orchestral and piano works such as Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, Dvořák’s New World Symphony, Debussy’s Children’s Corner Suite and Berg’s Piano Sonata Op. 1.
The New York Times has described him as “a masterly guitarist” with “chameleonic timbres,” while Italian reviewers referred to him as “standing on top of the repertoire’s Mount Everest.” His playing reveals both architectural structure and emotional depth, positioning him as one of the rare guitarists who can bridge virtuosity and musical introspection.
Career and collaborations
Caballero has appeared as a soloist, chamber musician and recitalist in major concert halls worldwide, including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center and the Library of Congress. He has collaborated with ensembles such as the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Orchestra of St. Luke’s and the Presidential Symphony Orchestra of Turkey. His chamber music partners include the Mendelssohn and Miró String Quartets, soprano Theresa Santiago and flautists Stefán Ragnar Höskuldsson and Carol Wincenc.
Early years and education
Born in Lima, Peru, Caballero began guitar studies at age ten at the National Conservatory of Music, first with Eleodoro Mori and later with Oscar Zamora. His talent was quickly recognized: at twelve he shared First Prize at the Conservatory Competition, at thirteen he won Second Prize in the adult division of the National Guitar Competition, and at fifteen he received an award at the First Latin American Guitar Competition in Montevideo.
He later earned major international distinctions at the Luis Sigall, Tokyo and Alhambra Competitions. At nineteen he won First Prize at the Walter W. Naumburg International Competition in New York – the only guitarist ever to do so.
Teaching and artistic contribution

Jorge Caballero is on the faculty of the University of Toronto in Canada and Kean State University in the United States. He also serves as honorary professor at the National University of Music in Lima. Through his concerts, masterclasses and transcriptions, he continues to shape future generations of musicians while expanding the expressive range of the classical guitar.
