Justin Chen – a young prodigy in classical guitar

Justin Chen emerged early as a classical guitar prodigy in Los Angeles, and although still very young, his artistic range and technical confidence already place him among the most exciting emerging players.

Early beginnings and study

Justin began serious guitar study at a young age, quickly showing a musical maturity beyond his years. At just eleven, he recorded demanding works such as Albéniz’s Asturias (Leyenda) on a high-end classical instrument, demonstrating both dexterity and expressive control. He also recorded movements from Leo Brouwer’s El Decámeron Negro and other advanced repertoire in his early teens.

Repertoire and artistic identity

Justin’s repertoire already spans established classics and challenging modern works. One notable example is his performance of Celedonio Romero’s Fantasia Cubana, recorded on a fine guitar in 2024. His choice of pieces reflects a willingness to look beyond the standard guitar canon and strive for high artistic ambition.

Recordings and performances

Though still young, Justin has participated in professional-level recording sessions, selecting instruments, testing tone and presenting videos of his playing to broader audiences. His session at Guitar Salon International in Santa Monica involved thoughtful choices of guitar and repertoire that highlight his growing artistic maturity.

Outlook

What makes Justin Chen notable is his combination of early technical command, broad musical curiosity and clarity of musical expression. As he continues to grow and refine his artistry, he appears poised to develop into a significant voice among the new generation of classical guitarists. His future looks bright.
