Born in 2000, Turkish guitarist Özberk Miraç Sarıgül has rapidly established himself as one of the most talented young guitarists of his generation. Combining expressive lyricism with technical command, he represents a new chapter in Turkey’s flourishing classical guitar tradition.
Early years and orchestral performances
From an early age, Sarıgül distinguished himself not only as a soloist but also as an orchestral performer. His debut with the Bilkent Symphony Orchestra in 2017, performing Joaquín Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez, was followed in 2019 by Fantasía para un Gentilhombre with the Bilkent Youth Symphony Orchestra. These early experiences shaped his musical maturity and his understanding of large-scale concert repertoire.
Repertoire and artistry
As a soloist, Özberk Miraç Sarıgül performs an impressively wide repertoire ranging from the delicate poetry of John Dowland to the intricate counterpoint of J. S. Bach and the Spanish expressiveness of Joaquín Rodrigo, Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco and Joaquín Turina. His playing is noted for its clarity, warmth and refined articulation.
Competitions and awards
In 2018, Sarıgül was named “Musician of the Year – Under 18” at the 8th Donizetti Classical Music Awards, one of the most prestigious cultural distinctions in Turkey. He went on to win first prizes at the International Istanbul Guitar Festival Competition, the Estonia Lions – Thomas Kuti European Classical Guitar Competition, and the Florida Guitar Foundation’s Virtual Competition in 2020.
Education and mentorship
Sarıgül studies at Bilkent University’s Faculty of Music and Performing Arts under Kağan Korad. He has taken part in masterclasses with some of the world’s most respected guitarists, including Leo Brouwer, Pepe Romero, Aniello Desiderio, Hopkinson Smith, David Russell and Hubert Käppel. These encounters have contributed to his stylistic depth and artistic versatility.
Performances and collaborations
In addition to his solo career, Sarıgül has appeared in duo with Mesut Özgen at the Türkiye Gitar Buluşması Festival and has been invited to perform at numerous festivals throughout Turkey and abroad. His concerts reveal a thoughtful musician who balances virtuosity with emotional sincerity.
