Stefan Hackl
Stefan Hackl, Dr. phil., born in 1954, teaches at the Tyrolean State Conservatory and at the Mozarteum Salzburg/Innsbruck. Several prize winners of national and international competitions have emerged from his guitar class. His work focuses on historical instruments, early music performance practice, 19th-century chamber music and folk music. He places particular emphasis on researching and documenting the Austrian guitar tradition.
Scholarship and Performance
Stefan Hackl holds a doctorate in musicology (Dr. phil.) alongside his performing career — a combination that gives his work a distinctive scholarly depth. He teaches at the Tyrolean State Conservatory (Tiroler Landeskonservatorium) and at the Mozarteum University Salzburg/Innsbruck, two of Austria's leading music education institutions. His academic research focuses on guitar history and the early Romantic period; he maintains the Gitarre-Archiv, an online resource devoted to documenting the history of the classical guitar, and has contributed to research on Johann Georg Stauffer's guitar innovations through his work on the Stauffer and Co. project. His dual engagement with performance and scholarship places him in a small group of guitarists who illuminate the repertoire they play from both inside and outside.
