Frequently Asked Questions About Classical Guitars

How do I choose the right classical guitar for my level?

Choosing the right classical guitar depends on your playing level, musical goals, and budget. Beginners benefit from studio-model guitars from renowned workshops, while advanced players and professionals often choose a handmade master guitar. We are happy to advise you personally and can send detailed sound samples and videos on request.

What is the difference between a master guitar and a studio guitar?

Master guitars are built entirely by hand in the workshop of a single luthier, using only high-quality, well-aged tonewoods. Studio guitars are made in small series, often under the supervision of the master luthier, and offer excellent value for students and ambitious amateur players.

Carlos Juan Busquiel – Luthier

Carlos Juan Busquiel, born in 1980 in the province of Alicante, Spain, represents a new generation of Spanish luthiers who combine traditional craftsmanship with modern sensibility. He began playing the guitar at the age of twelve while studying violin at the conservatory. Later, he earned a degree in Music and English from the University of Alicante and worked as a teacher for nine years before dedicating himself fully to instrument making.

His passion for luthiery began in a self-taught way, when he built his first electric violin for personal use, followed by an acoustic model inspired by the “Kruse” Stradivari. This early curiosity led him to meet Rafael López Porras in Cádiz, who introduced him to the art of Spanish guitar making. Under López Porras’s guidance, Busquiel discovered his vocation and decided to focus entirely on guitar building.

A turning point in his career came when he studied under José Luis Romanillos, one of the most revered Spanish luthiers of the 20th century. During a course on vihuela construction directed by Jaume Bosser and assisted by Joan Pellisa, he learned the traditional principles of the Spanish guitar as defined by Antonio de Torres. This experience shaped his philosophy and understanding of design and acoustics.

Throughout his studies, Busquiel had the opportunity to examine historical instruments by legendary makers such as Vicente Arias, José and Manuel Ramírez, Santos Hernández, Enrique García, and Francisco Simplicio. These encounters deeply influenced his work and inspired the evolution of his own guitar models, which are now recognized for their refined tone, clarity, and expressive depth.

Based in Petrer, a town in Alicante on Spain’s eastern coast, Busquiel builds guitars by hand for musicians across Europe, Asia, and the United States. His instruments, rooted in Spanish tradition yet continually evolving, reflect his devotion to sound, craftsmanship, and the timeless artistry of the classical guitar.
