Manuel Contreras I

Manuel González Contreras (1928–1994) was one of the most influential Spanish luthiers of the 20th century. Trained as a cabinetmaker and later shaped by his years in the José Ramírez III workshop, he developed a distinctive style after founding his own shop in 1962. His son, Pablo Manuel Contreras, continued the family tradition, ensuring the Contreras name remains synonymous with refined craftsmanship and the characteristic Spanish sound.

About the Luthier

Manuel González Contreras (1928–1994) was one of the most important Spanish guitar makers of the 20th century. Originally trained as a cabinetmaker, he entered the world of guitar making through his collaboration with José Ramírez III, working in the renowned Ramírez workshop from 1959 to 1962. These formative years provided him with invaluable knowledge that shaped his distinctive style.

After leaving the Ramírez shop, Contreras established his own workshop and developed a signature approach to classical guitar building, marked by strong projection, refined voice separation, and a characteristic Spanish tonal identity. His instruments remain highly regarded and are considered iconic examples of traditional Spanish craftsmanship.

His son, Pablo Manuel Contreras (1957–2011), continued the family legacy, ensuring that the Contreras name remains synonymous with exceptional craftsmanship and the unmistakable sound of Spain. The guitars created by the Contreras family are treasured by musicians seeking the authentic essence of the Spanish classical guitar tradition.
