Dieter Hense belonged to the distinguished instrument-making tradition of Markneukirchen, where he served as an elected Obermeister before continuing his work in West Germany. His interests extended far beyond the classical guitar: Hense contributed significantly to the renewed interest in historical plucked instruments such as the vihuela and lute and built a wide range of finely crafted instruments throughout his career.
