The Herb guitar-making workshop was founded in Erlangen in 1972 by Hans Hermann Herb, who had begun his training as a guitar maker at the Bubenreuth vocational school in 1965 and completed his master craftsman examination in 1971. In 1983, he was recognised by the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg as a freelance artist, establishing the workshop’s identity as a place where instrument making and artistic craftsmanship meet. His son Alexander Herb began his own training in the family workshop in 1989 and completed his master craftsman examination in Mittenwald in 2001, after which he became a partner in the workshop. Having worked alongside his father from his earliest years as a maker, Alexander developed his own instruments with a particular focus on the concert guitar, while father and son continued the workshop together for an international circle of players.
