Overview
Ignacio Fleta (1897-1977) is one of the most famous luthiers of the twentieth century. In addition to being a successful guitar maker, he was a recognized bowed and ancient instruments luthier (violins, violas, cellos, vihuelas, and violas de gamba). After his death, his work was continued by his two sons Gabriel and Francisco Fleta and later by his grandson Gabriel Fleta Jr. The current waiting time for a new guitar is about 20 years. Fleta follow a different concept than other Spanish luthiers from, for example, Andalusia. Their guitars are characterized among other things by a 9-fan-bracing instead of 5 or 7-fan bracing.
This guitar, built in 1982, is an impressive instrument that exemplifies the aesthetic beauty and exceptional sound quality characteristic of Ignacio Fleta's work. The guitar is constructed with an excellent set of straight-grained Indian rosewood, paired with a first-rate red cedar top. Its overall condition is very good, with only minor cosmetic wear and tear including string dents below the bridge and a small dent on the upper bout treble side. Additionally, some lacquer finish on the Indian rosewood back and sides exhibits slight crackling, a characteristic not unusual for guitars of this age and make. What distinguishes this guitar is the powerful and spontaneous character of its sound, a hallmark of Fleta's instruments. Its remarkable volume is consistently impressive, and this particular guitar is especially notable. The instrument’s sound is characterized by great lyricism, complemented by exceptional playability that allows the guitarist to fully express their creativity. Its tone is round and warm, with a remarkable sustain and perfectly balanced sound. Ignacio Fleta's guitars have been influential throughout an entire musical era, and this stunning instrument provides clear evidence of why that is so.
