Masaru Kohno - 1982 Concert

Masaru Kohno - 1982 Concert

Overview

Masaru Kohno (1926-1998) is an essential figure in Japanese guitar-making history and a visionary luthier. Born in Mito City, Japan, he started his career as a luthier after graduating from the Tokyo College of Arts and Crafts. In 1959, Masaru Kohno traveled to Arcangel Fernandez’s workshop in Spain, where he stayed for six months for an enlightening apprenticeship. A turning point in his career was winning the Gold Medal at the Elizabeth’s Concourse International Guitar Building Competition in Belgium in 1967, which brought him worldwide recognition. The list of players having recorded and performed on Masaru Kohno’s guitar is substantial, and to name a few, Julian Bream, Oscar Gighlia, and Sharon Isbin.

This 1982 Concert Model by Masaru Kohno represents the pinnacle of craftsmanship from Japan's most celebrated luthier. During the period from 1963 to 1982, Kohno utilized a unique numbering system for his models, which originally reflected the retail prices in Japan; for example, a No. 20 sold for 200,000 Japanese Yen. However, this system became outdated due to economic growth and inflation, leading to inconsistencies in the quality designation of the models over the years. By 1982, the Kohno name became exclusive to the finest classical guitars, marking this particular instrument as one of the first in this revered category. Crafted with Indian rosewood back and sides and a spruce soundboard, this concert-level guitar features exquisite details, excellent tuners, and impressive handmade purflings around the soundhole and borders. Despite showing some signs of use, it remains in very good condition without any cracks or structural issues. Moreover, the six-hole bridge has been upgraded to twelve holes to simplify string changes. The guitar produces the classic Kohno sound—clear, woody, and slightly dark for a spruce model, making it a first-rate choice for serious classical guitarists.

  • Classical Guitars

The classical guitar, with its soft nylon strings and characteristic timbre, has become a symbol of chamber music, Spanish tradition, and concert repertoire. Its modern form was shaped by Antonio de Torres in the 19th century, setting the standard for the body, fan bracing, and the 65-centimeter scale length that are still used today. Instruments in this category open up a rich palette from the refined Romantic miniatures of Tárrega to the majestic concertos of Rodrigo. Here you will find guitars that preserve historical continuity and at the same time inspire new interpretations.
