About the luthier
Pedro Maldonado was born in Loja, Granada, in 1929 and first learned to work with wood in his father’s cabinetmaking workshop. His early fascination with guitars, lutes, and bandurrias led him to seek guidance from prominent Granada makers including Manuel de la Chica, Eduardo Ferrer, and Antonio Robles. Alongside his work at the bench, Maldonado performed as a guitarist for Radio Loja and accompanied flamenco singers at festivals, giving him direct experience of the musical demands placed on the instrument. He opened his first workshop in Loja in 1959 and later moved with his family to Málaga, where his guitars found an increasingly international clientele. His sons Pedro and Luis continued the family tradition, extending a legacy that became closely associated with Málaga guitar making. Pedro Maldonado died in 2020 at the age of ninety.
