About the luthier
Pedro Maldonado was born in Loja, Granada, in 1929 and first learned to work with wood in his father’s cabinetmaking workshop. His early fascination with guitars, lutes, and bandurrias led him to seek guidance from prominent Granada makers including Manuel de la Chica, Eduardo Ferrer, and Antonio Robles. Alongside his work at the bench, Maldonado performed as a guitarist for Radio Loja and accompanied flamenco singers at festivals, giving him direct experience of the musical demands placed on the instrument. He opened his first workshop in Loja in 1959 and later moved with his family to Málaga, where his guitars found an increasingly international clientele. His sons Pedro and Luis continued the family tradition, extending a legacy that became closely associated with Málaga guitar making. Pedro Maldonado died in 2020 at the age of ninety.
About the guitar
Built in 1994, this traditional flamenco guitar combines a spruce soundboard with cypress back and sides in a voice that feels open, immediate, and thoroughly at home in the flamenco idiom. Notes leave the soundboard with little resistance, giving rapid passages and rhythmic articulation a quick, direct response. A distinctly nasal core brings focus and character to the tone, while subtle changes of attack reveal a broad range of colours rather than a single fixed timbre. The sound has the settled openness of a well-played instrument, allowing individual notes to emerge freely and chords to release with clarity. Despite its substantial 660 mm scale, the neck feels comfortable, and the flamenco setup makes the guitar easy to handle under both hands. It is an expressive example of Maldonado’s mature work, balancing traditional Andalusian character with the responsiveness and tactile immediacy required by the player.
Condition
The guitar is in very good condition, with normal playing and cosmetic marks consistent with its age. The centre joint of the soundboard appears to have been reglued and lightly repolished. No cleats are visible, and there are no indications of current instability or other crack-related issues.
