Philip Woodfield - 2017

Philip Woodfield - 2017

Overview

Philip Woodfield is a UK based luthier who for over 30 years produces guitars that have clarity, sustain, and good separation of notes. Their sound is pure and sweet with a lot of volume. Since he also is an excellent guitarist, he understands how important it is for a guitar player to have an instrument that is expressive and has an extensive tonal palette. As one of the most respected and sought-after English luthiers, his guitars are played professionally all over the world.

This beautiful guitar from 2017, named "Kyla" and bearing the number 396, is a Grand Concert 4 model with a very interesting and unique bracing pattern. The latter consists of concentric struts on both sides of the bridge, resulting in a powerful, balanced, and rich sounding guitar. Philip told us a few words about this system:

“For quite a few years I have been considering this new design and now it has come to fruition. My idea was to try to combine the sound of my traditional guitars of the 90s but with more of the power, sustain and ease of play that I have achieved with the GC lattice braced series that comprises most of my output since around 2003. The way in which the top works is a little closer to that of a more traditional design and I am excited by the results.“

This generously sounding instrument has a breathtaking sustain and a warm tone. The playing experience is exceptional, with amazingly easy playability for both hands. A plethora of interesting details can be seen when you take a closer look at the design. The rosette is asymmetrical, as are the purflings on the top. A beautiful bear-claw spruce soundboard is paired with fine cocobolo back and sides. Subtle inlays on the back are reminiscent of the intricate pattern of the rosette, this motif can also be seen on the tie block. Finally, the highest quality Rodgers tuners make for perfect, stable tuning and highlight the precious character of this ultimate concert guitar.

  • Classical Guitar

The classical guitar, with its soft nylon strings and characteristic timbre, has become a symbol of chamber music, Spanish tradition, and concert repertoire. Its modern form was shaped by Antonio de Torres in the 19th century, setting the standard for the body, fan bracing, and the 65-centimeter scale length that are still used today. Instruments in this category open up a rich palette from the refined Romantic miniatures of Tárrega to the majestic concertos of Rodrigo. Here you will find guitars that preserve historical continuity and at the same time inspire new interpretations.
