Overview

Masaki Sakurai, the nephew of the great Japanese luthier Masaru Kohno, was born in 1944. He studied electrical engineering at Sophia University and joined “Kohno Guitar Manufacturing” after graduating in 1967. In 1988 he won the prestigious first prize at the Fourth International Paris Guitar Making Competition. Masaki Sakurai’s guitars are of impeccable craftsmanship and are known for their ease of playing and their great volume.

The model “Professional J” is a beautiful instrument, which is easily recognizable by its symmetrical bridge, as it is the only model of the Sakurai-Kohno line that has this feature, as well as by its beautiful back and sides made of Madagascar rosewood.
Masaki Sakurai built this guitar in the same tradition and in the same manner as his uncle Masaru Kohno, hence the name Kohno as an homage on the label. The result is an instrument very similar to the Masaru Kohno Model 30 from the early 1970s. However, unlike the earlier models with a scale length of 664 mm, this instrument has a more comfortable 650 mm scale length, making it a lot more accessible for most guitarists.

This brand-new 2022 guitar was built with the utmost precision of Japanese craftsmanship. It features a beautiful selection of fine woods that have been excellently crafted. A beautiful instrument that is very pleasant to play as a result of the precision and consistency at a high level. In addition, the clear and smoothly singing trebles as well as the evenness of the sustain across the entire fingerboard are particularly captivating.

  • Classical Guitars

The classical guitar, with its soft nylon strings and characteristic timbre, has become a symbol of chamber music, Spanish tradition, and concert repertoire. Its modern form was shaped by Antonio de Torres in the 19th century, setting the standard for the body, fan bracing, and the 65-centimeter scale length that are still used today. Instruments in this category open up a rich palette from the refined Romantic miniatures of Tárrega to the majestic concertos of Rodrigo. Here you will find guitars that preserve historical continuity and at the same time inspire new interpretations.
