Goran Krivokapic

Goran Krivokapic

Setting new standards with technical virtuosity and his characteristical interpretation of old and new repertoire makes Goran Krivokapić one of the leading guitarists and chamber musicians of the new, international scene.

He won his first international competition at the age of fourteen, and continued to win eighteen more, including “Michele Pittaluga” (Alessandria, 2000), “Andrés Segovia” (La Herradura, 2000), Koblenz International Guitar Competition (2003), Guitar Foundation of America (Montreal, 2004), and the Dr. Luis Sigall International Competition of Musical Performance (Viña del Mar, 2004).

Two Golden Guitar awards followed at the International Guitar Convention in Alessandria — 2005 as Best Young Guitarist and 2006 for his debut CD. Since then, he has performed across Europe, the Americas, Asia, Africa, and Russia in prestigious venues such as the Concertgebouw (Amsterdam), Tchaikovsky Hall (Moscow), Lubkowitz Palace (Vienna), and Auditorio Conde Duque (Madrid).

As a performer, lecturer, and adjudicator, Goran Krivokapić regularly appears — solo and as part of the Montenegrin Guitar Duo with Danijel Cerović — at major festivals including Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Festival Internacional de Música y Danza de Granada, Kotor Art, Koblenz International Guitar Festival, Forum Gitarre Wien, Iserlohn International Guitar Festival, GFA International Guitar Convention, A Tempo Festival, Guitar Art Festival, Shenyang Guitar Festival, and Daejon Guitar Festival.

He has performed as soloist with orchestras such as the Slovak Chamber Orchestra of Bohdan Warchal, Moscow “Russian Philharmonhy,” New Russian Symphony Orchestra, Turin Philharmonic, Johannesburg Symphony, KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic, Aukso Chamber Orchestra, Belgrade Philharmonic, Montenegrin Symphony, Romanian National Radio Orchestra, Folkwang Chamber Orchestra, Chilean Symphony, Primavera Orchestra, Istanbul State Symphony, St. George String Orchestra, Berliner Camerata, Philharmonic Orchestra Bremerhaven, and Shenyang Symphony Orchestra.

Goran Krivokapić has given masterclasses, Bach lectures, and workshops at institutions like the Grieg Academy (Norway), State University of New York, University of Toronto, Detmold University of Music, Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, Florida State University, Conservatorium Maastricht, University of Cape Town, University of Texas at Dallas, Victoria Conservatory of Music, Chapman University, Royal Conservatory of Music in Montreal, Seoul National University, University of Manitoba, University of Texas in Brownsville, Glinka Conservatory (Nizhny Novgorod), University of Wisconsin, Loyola Marymount University (Los Angeles), Arkansas State University, University of Veracruz, and Tianjin Conservatory.

He is active in “Rhapsody in School,” an outreach initiative promoting classical music in schools founded by Lars Vogt.

Regular media appearances include Medici TV, BBC, France Musique, Arte, Deutschlandfunk Kultur, WDR, Hessischer Rundfunk, Bayerischer Rundfunk, MDR, SWR, Fox 7, WGBH Boston, Fine Music Radio, ClassicFM, ABC Classic, and RTCG. His recordings and performances are praised in Gramophone Magazine (UK), Classical Guitar Magazine (UK), Soundboard Magazine (USA), The WholeNote (Canada), Akustik Gitarre, Neue Musikzeitung (Germany), Gendai Guitar Magazine (Japan), Musica, Seicorde, Il Fronimo, La Stampa (Italy), Les Cahiers de la Guitare (France), and Beeld, Die Burger (South Africa), Vijesti, and Mobilart (Montenegro).

His musical focus includes developing new works for classical guitar, transcribing baroque and classical pieces, and collaborating with contemporary composers like Gerard Drozd, Hendrik Hofmeyr, and Atanas Ourkouzounov, who have dedicated works to him and the Montenegrin Guitar Duo.

Montenegrin Guitar Duo’s live performances and their Naxos-recorded world premieres of J.S. Bach’s complete English Suites (two volumes) have earned high praise from audiences and critics alike.

Born in 1979, he started guitar studies at age eight with Mićo Poznanović at the Music School of Herceg Novi, continued at the Faculty of Music Art in Belgrade (Prof. Srđan Tošić), graduating in 2000. He studied with Hubert Käppel and Roberto Aussel at the Hochschule für Musik Köln and received the Konzertexamen degree. He pursued his Master’s at Conservatorium Maastricht with Carlo Marchione and then Masters with Raphaella Smits at LUCA School of Arts, Leuven. He is currently a guitar professor at Cologne University of Music and teaches at Detmold University of Music. He lives in Cologne with his wife and son.

Your next step is a real classic

  • Classical Guitar

The classical guitar, with its soft nylon strings and characteristic timbre, has become a symbol of chamber music, Spanish tradition, and concert repertoire. Its modern form was shaped by Antonio de Torres in the 19th century, setting the standard for the body, fan bracing, and the 65-centimeter scale length that are still used today. Instruments in this category open up a rich palette from the refined Romantic miniatures of Tárrega to the majestic concertos of Rodrigo. Here you will find guitars that preserve historical continuity and at the same time inspire new interpretations.
