Danilo Bazzana
Danilo Bazzana was born in Milan in 1985 and is one of the most promising voices in contemporary Italian classical guitar making. His connection to the instrument began at the age of thirteen, when he first picked up the guitar — a passion that would shape the rest of his life. In April 2015, he opened his own workshop in the center of Paderno Dugnano, near Milan, where he divides his time between building new classical guitars and the fine-tuning, restoration, and repair of plucked stringed instruments of every kind.
Bazzana builds his guitars in the traditional manner, drawing inspiration from the great masters of the past while developing a personal voice deeply influenced by the French school of guitar making — in particular the legacy of Robert Bouchet and Daniel Friederich. Central to his philosophy is the conviction that every component of a guitar "must vibrate in its entirety," a principle that governs his exacting selection of materials and his pursuit of perfect harmony in the instrument's sonic expression. He pays particular attention to the elasticity and touch-sensitivity of the soundboard and to the careful crafting of the fingerboard, ensuring the highest possible degree of comfort and playability for the performer.
His instruments combine striking aesthetics with exceptional tonal character. Typical Bazzana guitars feature spruce soundboards — sometimes torrefied for enhanced responsiveness and tonal maturity — paired with Indian rosewood back and sides for warmth and depth. The sound is crystalline and beautifully layered, with effortless sustain, balanced harmony, amplified projection, and sharp clarity in polyphonic passages. From the most refined classical repertoire to contemporary works, his guitars respond with nuance and authority, qualities that have made them favorites among discerning players. He has also experimented with 12-hole bridges and Hauser-inspired bracing in some instruments, demonstrating the breadth of his technical curiosity.
Bazzana has been a regular invited maker at the Roma Guitar Expo, where each year he presents a one-of-a-kind special edition guitar. For the 2025 edition, he developed an entirely new rosette design featuring a three-dimensional geometric effect, combining stabilized burl woods with colored epoxy resin to create vivid, bright colors after finishing — a striking example of how his work merges historical sensibility with contemporary innovation. Fascinated by the intimate nature of guitar playing, where the performer is in direct contact with the strings, Bazzana strives to build instruments that respond to the slightest touch and translate the artist's intention into pure musical expression. He stands today as one of the most refined and forward-looking young luthiers of the new Italian generation.
