Some works matter far beyond their length. Manuel de Falla (1876–1946), the greatest Spanish composer of his generation, wrote only a single piece for solo guitar — yet that one short work helped open the modern era of the instrument.
Spain's leading composer
De Falla stood at the centre of Spanish music, the composer of El amor brujo and Nights in the Gardens of Spain, a master who fused Andalusian folk roots with the sophistication of Paris, where he spent formative years among Debussy, Ravel and Dukas. That blend of deep Spanish feeling and modern refinement is exactly what he brought, just once, to the guitar.
The Homenaje "Le Tombeau de Claude Debussy"
In 1920 a French journal invited composers to contribute to a collection in memory of Claude Debussy, who had died in 1918. De Falla responded with the Homenaje, "Le Tombeau de Claude Debussy" — and chose, strikingly, to write it for guitar. Built on the rhythm of a slow habanera and quietly quoting Debussy, it is grave, dignified and unmistakably Spanish. It was later arranged for piano and orchestra, but the guitar was its first and truest home.
Why it matters so much
The Homenaje was a landmark: a major non-guitarist composer of the front rank writing seriously for the instrument, lending it new prestige at the very moment Segovia's generation was carrying it onto the world's concert stages. Short as it is, it remains one of the most important and frequently played works of the twentieth-century repertoire.
