This guide is part of our overview of the essential classical guitar repertoire. Fernando Sor (1778–1839) was the greatest guitar composer of the early nineteenth century — a Spanish musician who combined Viennese Classical discipline with Iberian lyricism to produce a body of works that remains central to guitar education and concert programming nearly two centuries later.
The Mozart of the Guitar
Born in Barcelona, Sor received a rigorous musical education at the Montserrat monastery and developed as both a composer and guitarist of exceptional ability. His troubled biography — forced to flee Spain after the Napoleonic wars, he spent decades in Paris and London — shaped a body of music that is simultaneously disciplined and deeply expressive. In Paris he moved in the highest artistic circles and performed for audiences that included royalty and the leading musicians of the day.
