At HANIKA, craftsmanship is regarded as tailor-made precision and sound as art. The manufacture in Baiersdorf traces its roots to Helmut Hanika, who founded the SOLI company in 1953 after learning violin making through the family workshop tradition of his grandfather, Anton Mayer. As demand changed, Helmut Hanika moved from folk guitar production toward high-quality classical guitars, establishing the name Hanika as a respected German reference for refined hand-built instruments.
Since 1993, the company has been led by Armin Hanika, the second generation of the family. Under his direction, HANIKA continues to combine experienced handcraft, carefully selected materials, and modern construction concepts across a wide range of classical guitars, from the Studio Line to the specially made instruments of the Professional Line.
About the guitar
This Hanika Natural Doubletop Custom is a distinctive special version of the Professional Line model, built with a spruce double-top soundboard and back and sides made from chechen, also known as Caribbean rosewood. The choice of chechen gives the guitar a particularly striking visual identity, with lively figure and depth that make the wood itself one of the instrument’s defining features. Combined with Hanika’s light and efficient double-top concept, the result is a concert guitar with a refined, responsive, and highly individual character.
Musically, this custom model is marked by remarkable sustain and a soft, overtone-rich voice. The sound opens with warmth and elasticity, allowing notes to stretch and release with impressive length. At the same time, the guitar is not limited to a dark or rounded colour: when played with more energy, the tone gains brilliance and presence, creating an engaging contrast between softness and clarity.
This balance gives the instrument a wide expressive range. It can respond with a gentle, almost floating quality in lyrical passages, yet remains capable of a brighter and more projected sound when the music asks for greater intensity. The Natural finish keeps the guitar direct and understated, while the reinforced cedro neck, African blackwood fingerboard, and refined head design complete the instrument with Hanika’s characteristic sense of practical stability and careful detail. How do I properly care for my classical guitar?
