John Price – Guitars from Down Under
John Price, originally from England, emigrated to Australia, where he has become one of the most respected modern classical guitar makers. Trained as a cabinetmaker, he discovered the art of luthiery as a self-taught craftsman. With decades of experience and a spirit of experimentation, he has developed exceptional guitars that combine superb tonewood selection with innovative construction methods.
His philosophy centers on the vibratory properties of the soundboard, aiming to produce instruments with remarkable volume, a wide tonal spectrum, and rich nuance. The result is guitars that deliver outstanding projection, clarity, and expressiveness.
John Price’s classical guitars are played by an impressive roster of concert guitarists and performers worldwide, including Jorge Morel, Ricardo Cobo, Muriel Anderson, Krzysztof Pelech, Rene Izquierdo, Elina Chekan, Jorge Caballero, Ricardo Iznaola, Ignacio Barcia, Jason Behr, Anthony Bez, Candice Mowbray, and notable musicians such as George Benson and Andy Summers (The Police).
John Price – How It All Started
John Price’s fascination with the guitar began at the age of eight, when he first played a cheap metal-string guitar with a cowboy design. After breaking all its strings, he replaced them with his father’s fishing line—a playful yet defining moment that marked the start of his lifelong passion. As he puts it, “I’ve been stringing ever since.”
In the 1970s, his family moved from the Midlands to Australia, where John pursued a career in cabinetmaking. Working with diverse woods, tools, and machines laid the groundwork for his evolution into a master luthier. This combination of craftsmanship, curiosity, and dedication to sound has made him one of the most innovative guitar builders in Australia today.
