Originally trained as a carpenter, he discovered guitar making through master luthier Daniel Luz and later deepened his skills during five formative years in the UK. Now based in Cortiçois near Lisbon, he builds concert guitars inspired by renowned makers such as Torres, Romanillos, Hauser, Friederich, Field, and Dammann. His instruments are admired for their expressive tone, balance, and meticulous craftsmanship.

Portugal has produced many talented individuals, and among them is José Marques – a name that resonates with music lovers and woodworking enthusiasts alike. A respected guitar maker, his story is a harmonious blend of artistry and craftsmanship.

José’s passion for guitars and other string instruments began at an early age. However, life initially led him down a different path: at just 14 years old, he started working as a carpenter. Over the years, he honed his skills in woodworking while continuing to nurture his love for music.

While living in the Alentejo region, fate introduced him to renowned traditional string instrument luthier Daniel Luz – a turning point that changed his life. Under Luz’s guidance, José spent two formative years learning the intricate art of handcrafting instruments such as the Portuguese Guitar, Viola Campaniça, ukulele, and classical guitar.

Eager to deepen his knowledge, José explored the works of historical and contemporary master luthiers. His pursuit of excellence eventually led him to the United Kingdom, where he spent five years absorbing new techniques and influences. His main inspirations include Antonio de Torres, José Romanillos, Hermann Hauser, Daniel Friederich, Dominique Field, and Matthias Dammann.

José eventually returned to Portugal, settling in Cortiçois near Lisbon Airport. There, he continues to build concert guitars that seamlessly blend traditional craftsmanship with modern ideas.

His journey is a symphony of dedication, passion, and mastery. José Marques’ guitars are more than musical instruments – they are expressions of his lifelong devotion to music and craft. Each one reflects Portuguese cultural heritage and the soul of a true artisan.
