Overview

Matthias Dammann is an extraordinary German luthier, precursor, and pioneer of double-top guitars. He always led a lot of research, studying the sound of guitars from the past, such as Antonio de Torres’ ones, and patenting his innovations. He brought many positive changes in the guitar conception of the end of the twentieth century. His wooden “sandwich double-tops” and later his Nomex double-tops are incredibly light. They give the guitar an immediate response, outstanding volume, and blissful playability. The guitarists’ reaction to Matthias Dammann’s guitars was immediate, and performers such as David Russell, Manuel Barrueco, the Beijin Guitar Duo, etc., have been playing and recording on them for a long time.

The 1988 Matthias Dammann Solid Top guitar exemplifies the exceptional craftsmanship and expertise for which Dammann is renowned, particularly his pioneering work with double-top guitars. This earlier solid-top creation, made from cedar, showcases the same level of skill and precision. It stands as a true masterpiece, noted for its even tonality, enchanting charm, impressive volume, and superior playability. The soundboard of this guitar is meticulously tuned, reflecting Dammann's profound knowledge and passion for guitar-making. Although it bears some playing marks, indicative of its rich history and the enjoyment it has provided, the guitar remains in very good condition without any structural issues. This instrument has had only one owner throughout its life, who purchased it directly from Matthias Dammann in 1988, adding to its unique provenance. The visually striking Wenge wood used for the back and sides enhances the guitar’s aesthetic appeal, making it not just an exceptional musical instrument but also a work of art. Highly coveted by collectors and musicians alike, the 1988 Matthias Dammann Solid Top guitar is a rare find that offers incredible sound and playability, encapsulating the talents of a master luthier at the early stages of his distinguished career.
