Frequently Asked Questions About Classical Guitars

How do I choose the right classical guitar for my level?

Choosing the right classical guitar depends on your playing level, musical goals, and budget. Beginners benefit from studio-model guitars from renowned workshops, while advanced players and professionals often choose a handmade master guitar. We are happy to advise you personally and can send detailed sound samples and videos on request.

What is the difference between a master guitar and a studio guitar?

Master guitars are built entirely by hand in the workshop of a single luthier, using only high-quality, well-aged tonewoods. Studio guitars are made in small series, often under the supervision of the master luthier, and offer excellent value for students and ambitious amateur players.

About the Guitar Maker

Michael O’Leary was born in the picturesque medieval village of Graignamanagh, County Kilkenny, Ireland. His workshop is located nearby in Milford, Carlow. From an early age, he was inspired by his father, an avid guitarist, and grew up in a musically rich environment where the guitar always took center stage. Coming from a creative family, Michael found his greatest artistic fulfillment in working with fine woods, combining craftsmanship and music into one passion.

Today, Michael O’Leary is recognized as one of Ireland’s foremost luthiers. Together with his son Alec, he builds approximately nine guitars per year. His instruments feature a distinctive hybrid bracing system that merges concepts from both lattice and fan bracing, resulting in guitars of exceptional tonal power and refinement. This design evolved through extensive collaboration and feedback from some of the world’s greatest players, including the Assad Duo, David Russell, Berta Rojas, Manuel Barrueco, John Williams, Xuefei Yang, Aniello Desiderio, and Roland Dyens. Many of these artists proudly own and perform on O’Leary guitars.

Each O’Leary guitar embodies innovation, tradition, and expressive beauty, standing as a testament to the excellence of contemporary Irish guitar making.
