Frequently Asked Questions About Classical Guitars

How do I choose the right classical guitar for my level?

Choosing the right classical guitar depends on your playing level, musical goals, and budget. Beginners benefit from studio-model guitars from renowned workshops, while advanced players and professionals often choose a handmade master guitar. We are happy to advise you personally and can send detailed sound samples and videos on request.

What is the difference between a master guitar and a studio guitar?

Master guitars are built entirely by hand in the workshop of a single luthier, using only high-quality, well-aged tonewoods. Studio guitars are made in small series, often under the supervision of the master luthier, and offer excellent value for students and ambitious amateur players.

How do I properly care for my classical guitar?

A classical guitar requires constant humidity between 45 and 55 percent. Store the instrument in its case with a humidifier, avoid direct sunlight and large temperature fluctuations. Change the strings regularly and clean the guitar with a soft microfiber cloth.

Otto Rauch – Master Luthier and Guitar Maker from Germany

Otto Rauch, born in Mainz in 1954, began playing classical guitar at the age of nine. Although he initially pursued a career in insurance and business management, his passion for music soon prevailed. By 1977, he performed as a rock guitarist and singer. During this time, he built a replica of his own John Birch electric guitar — the same model famously played by Brian May. This marked the beginning of his path as a luthier.

Transition to Classical Guitar Making

In 1979, Rauch moved to Ibiza, where he discovered an old Ramirez classical guitar in a farmhouse. Fascinated by its structure, he created a detailed plan and began building classical guitars in 1980. This discovery sparked a lifelong dedication to guitar making.

Apprenticeship and Master Certification

From 1985 to 1987, Rauch trained with renowned luthier Klaus Roder, specializing in classical and jazz guitars. In 1987, he received his journeyman certificate under Dieter Hopf and soon achieved the title of master luthier. Since then, he has built instruments for esteemed musicians such as Angel Romero, Frank Bungarten, and many others.

In the late 1990s, Rauch developed a guitar model inspired by a 1930 Hauser I, focusing especially on the bridge angle and thickness — key elements influencing sound. Around the same time, he collaborated on building string instruments and bows for the Mainz Symphony Orchestra, eventually expanding his craft to violin making.

Diverse Guitar Models

His workshop produces both original models and faithful reproductions of historical instruments, including designs inspired by Hauser I (1930), Torres (1885), Humphrey, Stauffer, Schmid, and Stradivari. His guitars are played by musicians such as Stefan Hladek, Benjamin Scheck, and members of the Barrios Guitar Quartet.

A Life Devoted to Music and Craft

Beyond guitar making, Otto Rauch remains active as a musician and composer, recently completing his “Suite Christophoro Colombo” for guitar. He also builds other instruments, including Stradivari-style cellos and custom Fender electric guitars. His work continues to inspire musicians around the world.
