About the luthier
Based in Obermoschel in Rheinland-Pfalz, Otto Rauch has worked as a guitar maker for more than 35 years and belongs to the pioneering generation of German double-top construction. After repairing a guitar by Matthias Dammann in the early 1990s, he began developing his own double-top instruments, initially using cedar struts before moving to a balsa-core construction that he continued to refine. The name of his Domenico Montagnana model refers to the celebrated 18th-century Venetian violin maker whose cellos are admired for their dark sonority, considerable volume, and enigmatic construction—qualities that Rauch recognised in his own musical and structural approach.

Built in 2017, No. 258 belongs to Otto Rauch’s Domenico Montagnana “Sleeping Beauty” series, inspired by the celebrated cello made by Montagnana in 1739. Its cedar double top with balsa core produces a broad, deeply resonant voice whose warmth recalls the rounded sonority of a cello. The sound carries a pronounced inner core, yet remains clearly drawn: individual notes retain their shape instead of dissolving into a diffuse cloud, allowing sustained lines and layered textures to unfold with composure. The trebles are smooth and elegant, while the basses provide depth without becoming heavy. Long sustain gives phrases ample space to develop, and the instrument responds with an ease that supports both subtle colour changes and a wide dynamic range. Beautifully figured Madagascar rosewood is used for the back and sides, headplate, and bridge, bringing visual continuity to the design, while the slightly elevated fingerboard contributes to comfortable access in the upper register.
