Brian Cohen, an esteemed South African-born luthier, has been enchanting the music world with his exceptional craftsmanship since 1972. His journey began with guitar crafting and repair, notably, an emergency restoration job for the Abreu Brothers' Rubio 'New York period' 1964 guitars, an experience that catalyzed his enduring passion for lutherie. Over the years, he honed his skills, creating a stunning portfolio of over 500 instruments by 2008. Relocating to the UK in 1974, he formed a profound relationship with famed luthier David Rubio. Despite the unfulfilled apprenticeship with Rubio, the association became instrumental in shaping Cohen's career. He provided pivotal support during Rubio's battle with back pain, assuming the role of an 'outworker' and constructing most guitars and lutes in Rubio's later career.
In London, Cohen's career took a distinctive turn as he delved into the world of lute-making in his Portobello Road studio. His collaboration with esteemed luthiers at the Early Music Centre led to a collective focus on the authentic construction of early musical instruments. As the Centre relocated in 1979, Cohen established a workshop in South London, delving into the world of classical guitars and Italian violin-making techniques. His craftsmanship earned him the distinguished Crafts Council Award for cello construction in 1986 and a Silver Medal at the Manchester International Cello Festival in 1990. Yet, Cohen humbly denies being a 'competition' maker. Continuing his endeavors in Surrey and later Guildford, he preserves his passion for crafting, restoring, and dealing in stringed instruments at his renovated 'The Old Glassworks' studio. Cohen's dedication to lutherie and ceaseless quest for perfection have immortalized his reputation among the most influential luthiers of his era.
